Girl tried in Shelby Lyn Allen alcohol poisoning death
In an emotionally tense, packed courtroom late Thursday afternoon, Shasta County made its case against a 17-year-old Redding girl charged with felony involuntary manslaughter in the alcohol-poisoning death of Shelby Lyn Allen.

"Her decision was, 'If I don't do anything, maybe it will go away,' " Shasta County Deputy District Attorney Eric Anderson said of the defendant.

Adam Ryan, the girl's attorney, said she didn't realize the danger her friend was in or the warning signs of alcohol poisoning. Being a teen, he said, she lacked the life experience to recognize such signs.

"The message here is that none of these teenagers should have drank," Ryan said.

1. I don't understand why the equally-young friend is being held responsible
for the girl's alcohol poisoning death.

Of course, it would have been smart to call 9-1-1. Is she being punished for not calling 911? What am I missing here?

2. What am I missing here? Adults had a pattern of providing
alcohol to minors and allowing them to drink, were in the home when this happened and it is a teenaged young woman who is on trial for this tragedy...and charged with providing alcohol to a minor, which she only provided because the parents provided alcohol to minors.

Jeebus, this seems more than just a little bit screwed up.

3. Yeah it's screwed up
It's frankly an outrage, and it looks like 70% of the people in Redding agree.

(Which will be the ONLY time you will see 70% of the people agree on anything.)

5. The defendant is a white girl
but so is the "victim." :dilemma:
