IsThe Catholic Church into outright lobbying?
In its efforts to influence health care reform and oppose same-sex marriage, the Catholic Church is wading more deeply into politics than it has in recent memory, observers say.

The church's role in politics came into sharp relief this week when the Washington Post reported on Wednesday that the Washington, DC, diocese threatened to cease its charitable activities if the DC city council went ahead with a plan to allow same-sex marriage.

The church's social services arm provides support to 68,000 people in DC, among them the homeless and those in need of health care. It has received $8.2 million in funding from the DC government in the past three years, according to the city council.

Peter Rosenstein of the Campaign for All DC Families described the church's move as an attempt to "blackmail the city."

1. Seems more like outright blackmail from time to time over the years
Someone who lived in Europe a while, and got into some history there said Americans haven't got a clue the vile atrocities the Church has been party to, over centuries. (history buff was a Catholic too, WAS being the essential element)

4. I am sick of all this
First when bush was president he did a heck of a lot of things that were outrageous. People did complain but they did not go bonkers like the republicans are doing now. Democrats had respect for the office of the President.

But now you see republicans congress person going on TV and calling for revolution. Bachmann, Boehner and all the rest. It only shows that they are a bunch of callous, common, greedy, hate and violence urging people. What gives them the right to rant and rave. What gives them to right to try to over turn a legal election. Which is more you can say for the one when bush stole office.

They scream they want their country back. Well President Obama is giving them their country back, one bill at a time. He is trying to straighten out the mess bush made.

And then, regardless of the constitution, we now have the Catholic Church trying to tell congress what to do. What THEY want them to do. And we have congress people who are ignoring the majority of people who elected them and are turning congress and it's rules and regulations into a battle to get what THEY want to do to be law. How can we the people remedy this. Most of the a**holes who are behaving like children won't get thrown out of office. The American People are like the wind they think about something for a couple of months and then it is blown completely out of their mind and they go on to the next star, the next movie, the next song. I think it is about time AMERICA GREW UP. They are acting like a bunch of children. We should demand that the church keep it's nose out of government business. We should demand that congress to our bidding, and act like the statesmen and woman they are supposed to be. But as long as the republicans control the media this will never happen.

5. Disgusting
It's time the Catholics stood up to the bishops but they are too afraid to do this. What a bunch of sheep.
