I knew Republicans were wusses, but this is ridiculous.
Why are they so frightened about the fact that alleged terrorists will be coming to New York? Isn't one of the points of the criminal justice system to bring people to justice in the places where they committed their alleged crimes? Isn't is more appropriate to give the citizens of NYC the right to pass judgment -- and not some kangaroo court in Cuba?

My gosh, these people are freaks. Do they really think that these guys are going to escape? And if they do, I'm not sure how they will be able to remain inconspicuous.

2. They pretend to be afraid so that they can pretend we're threatening America
it's a dishonest and disgusting ploy.

Just keep these guys in Cuba forever (that is what they did for the last eight years):freak:

in a trial that they are afraid of.

8. You're absolutely correct as to the underlying objection.
There are definitely Republicans (Dick Cheney immediately springs to mind) who are smart enough to realize how silly the hand-wringing is, but use it to further their ultimate goal -- which is to keep the details of their torture policies secret.

That said, I also get the sense that there are many elected Republicans who aren't the sharpest tools in the shed who actually believe that this guy is going to get all ninja on everyone and bust out of prison:

20. Yes. Sorry for not warning everyone first.
I hope people didn't ruin their pants due to the shock of seeing a picture of such a terrifying individual.

5. I know. We really need to mock them mercilessly for being such total wimps. They are scared of
everything - healthcare reform makes them cry, trials for terrorists makes them shake.

Gawd, they are pathetic.

6. Remember conservatives were bred to be fearful, these are the same folks that wanted more prisons
yet threw the biggest hissy fits when they heard one was coming near them soon. And yes they do fear these guys are going to escape, never mind there hasn't been a escape from a super max prison since they started the super max prisons, but when prisoners escape from state prisons the media blows it all out of proportion to get the biggest dollar reward out of the story. Then theres the Hollywood prison break movies, where 90% of peoples knowledge of the prison system comes from.

7. The irony is that the defendants will probably ask for a change of venue
Tim McVeigh's trial was moved to Denver, and don't be surprised if the defendants' lawyers cite that as precedent for moving the cases.

16. Change of venue unlikely -- WTC cases have been tried in NYC
These "terrorist" cases have even less of a claim for a change of venue than others that have remained in NYC.

9. "kangaroo court in Cuba?" WTF?
It never ceases to amaze me how some people are so propagandized. What country in the world has hands down the most people, and the most people per capita locked up in prison? I'll bet you any money that for every case you might be able to find where someone was railroaded in a Cuban court I'll be able to find one or more cases here in the U.S.

*sigh*

10. Do I really need to clarify that I was referring to Gitmo?
And do we really need to spend time arguing whether the criminal justice system in the U.S., despite its obvious flaws, is far superior to a military commission in Gitmo?

13. No I was not aware you were referring to Gitmo
There's a lot of folks here I've noticed who like to bash Cuba and Hugo Chavez. I too would refer to a military tribunal in Gitmo as a kangaroo court.

14. No worries!
I hope people aren't clueless enough to think that the U.S. would turn over a significant prosecution to the Cuban government, but I guess you can never be sure . . .

11. I don't think he meant it as an insult to Cuba or Cubans
I am making an assumption here, but I am pretty sure the OP was referring to the military courts that we have set up at Guantanamo Bay, not to Cuban courts. The alleged terrorists are coming to New York to access the civil legal system after years of being held without due process in American Military facilities on Cuban soil. That was the Kangaroo court he was referring to.

to destroy all the good things this country has always stood for.

Sadly, they almost succeeded during the last administration.

I don't know if we'll ever get it back.

out which put Bush in a bad light and therefore themselves in a
bad light.

Reopening wounds in other words.
