Sooners chant leaving fans divided
Sooners chant leaving fans divided

NORMAN, Okla., Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Some fans of the University of Oklahoma's Sooners football team said the popular chant of "home of the Sooners" is disrespectful to the United States.

U.S. Army veteran Dick Murphy, who lives in Norman, Okla., said he questions why most fans say "home of the Sooners" instead of "home of the brave" while singing "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Sooners home games, The Oklahoman reported Friday.

"It's really out of character for this state," Murphy said. "I just feel it's disrespectful to the flag and to the nation."

"People just don't understand what the national anthem represents," University of Oklahoma fan Eddie Joslin said.

University of Oklahoma President David Boren offered his take on the chant controversy, saying he hopes Sooners fans would offer a "go Sooners" after singing " the nation anthem properly.

7. how dare we disrespect a piece of cloth!
What a group of morans.
Tis an ancient BRITISH tune, and we stole it fair and square. Certainly the sooners are welcome to it, should they so choose.

12. "O say, does that STARS-spangled banner yet wave..."
Happens at every Dallas Stars home game. The crowd just yells "STARS!" at all the appropriate points during the National Anthem.

Whenever they host the Detroit Red Wings, you get a bonus "RED!" from the visitors on general principles.
