1. He quit.
But everybody assumes is was one of those "quit or you're fired" situations.

2. He probably was warned to tone it down, didn't want to tone it down, parties agreed to end contract.
That makes it a little of each, quitting and fired.

Sometimes it's just time to part company.

5. If you are on a roof and someone points a gun and says "Jump or I'll shoot?"
Did you jump or were you pushed?

8. Even if forced out
there's no way they actually fired him - their ownership would ream them if they acted affirmatively to get rid of their #2 show when their ratings are so far in the toilet.

13. Officially media personalities almost never get fired
It isn't in either party's interest for Dobbs to be fired. If they officially fired him, the network would look foolish for keeping him around for so long, and/or disloyal to its employees. If Dobbs had gotten officially fired, it would have done his career no good because it would make him look like an insubordinate employee.

I doubt if the network even mentioned the word in talks with him. They probably just said they were canceling his show and moving him to something else at a different (less desirable) time slot. Dobbs would have understood that he was being marginalized and he would have continually been marginalized until he was gone. So rather than fizzle out, he decided to leave while he was on top (more or less) so he could claim that he quit.

So back to the question, was he fired? No. However, a better question would be, did he really have any other option but to quit? and the answer to that question is no also. Dobbs had turned into a liability for CNN, and they aren't going to keep a liability around indefinitely.
