HAMILTON, Ohio (Nov. 12) -- A young Cincinnati Bengals fan has been penalized for clipping.
Dustin Reader got the NFL team's stripes and "B" insignia cut into his hair as a tribute to the team's good season.

When he showed up to school in the southwest Ohio city of Hamilton on Monday, officials put the eighth-grader into in-school suspension. The school says its code of conduct prohibits extreme and distracting hairstyles.

Reader's parents and barber say they don't understand why the haircut is out of bounds. His father says his son just wants to show pride in the 6-2 Bengals.

School officials say he will continue to do his studies away from other students until the hair grows back or he changes the style.

Edit: I cant get the picture to show up, but youll see it at the link.

3. The student clearly broke the school rules

Their dress code prohibits extreme and distracting hairstyles. At every school I've been involved in, parents are given a copy of the school rules and dress codes and are required to sign it. The boy and his parents are trying to rebel and they don't like the consequences.

I completely agree with the school's decision.

6. Yeah, rules are rules, but
I think maybe rainbow colored Liberty spikes are "extreme and distracting". This haircut is most definitely not.

7. it's not clear to me how "extreme" or "distracting" are defined
and I say "give me heads with hair. Long beautiful hair." Let's teach a little tolerance instead of teaching rigid conformity.

Although if the kid studied more and watched less football maybe he could wear an A on his head.

10. As a teacher I can tell you that that hairstyle would be very distracting
The kid and family are looking for attention. Trust me.

12. Distracting in what way? After some kids say its cool, Id imagine it be much to do about nothing.

13. Distracting as in students looking at it and talking about it
Instead of paying attention to the teacher.

We had some serious gender benders at my daughters' public high school in MD. No one cared or even talked about it.

16. I don't consider it extreme or distracting
Its also a style that has been fashionable with young African-American males.

4. Oh, dear Christ on a fucking cracker.
That kid looks like a normal teenager who happens to love his local football team -- NOT some gangsta wannabe who's trying to put gang symbols on his head.

This is sick. :grr:

8. I disagree with the school. I'd love to see the rules and what
exactly they consider extreme. Heck you can't even mis-interpret what the haircut is supposed to mean. Especially in Ohio! You gotta know it's the Bengals!

I wonder if this just isn't because it's close to Cinci?

18. This same thing happened to a Rays fan in Florida last year
Edited on Thu Nov-12-09 07:19 PM by KamaAina
obviously, because they're an expansion team, the only true lifelong Rays fans are school-age.

http://www.baynews9.com/content/40/2008/10/9/390184.html?title=Boy+Suspended+for+Sporting+Rayhawk

The Rayhawk, a trend ever since Tampa Bay Rays players starting sporting them, has gotten a 12-year-old boy an in-school suspension.

"I was surprised. It's just a hairdo, really nothing, just a hairdo," said Zach Sharples, an honor student at Lincoln Middle in Manatee County.

Sharples said he must stay under in-school suspension until he changes the haircut or grows it out....

Sharples' Mohawk is less than an inch high, but a representative for the school district said it is outlined in the dress code -- no distracting hairstyles.

a) The policy in Bradenton is eerily similar to that in Cincy. :tinfoilhat: I'm picturing "Footloose" on a national scale.

b) The so-called "Rayhawk" is really a glorified mullet. :puke:

edit: spelling
