Think about it: Lou Dobbs isn't as conservative as you may think.
- On his TV show, Dobbs has advocated impeaching President George W. Bush, a view that most conservatives frown upon.
- Unlike most conservative misinformers who question or blatantly deny global warming (such as Glenn Beck), Dobbs has acknowledged it.
- Dobbs opposed the Federal Marriage Amendment, which would have restricted the federal definition of marriage to between a man and a woman.
- In his 2006 book War on the Middle Class, Dobbs "comes out strongly against the Bush tax cuts, which he argues favor the wealthy, and argued for raising the U.S. minimum wage from what was then $5.15 an hour." (From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lou_Dobbs#Other_views">Wikipedia, cites Dobbs October 10, 2006 column)
- He said that US foreign policy was too biased in favor of Israel during its 2006 conflict with Lebanon.
- Ken Auletta, in a December 2006 of Dobbs for The New Yorker, wrote: "The left, to which Vonnegut belongs, can embrace Dobbs for his opposition to big corporations and his support for a higher minimum wage, national health insurance, and abortion rights."

HOWEVER:

Yes, I do acknowledge also that Dobbs has been a loudspeaker for the right-wing noise machine.
- In 1999, Dobbs anchored his Moneyline program from Los Alamos during the 1999 scandal over Chinese espionage. At that time, as the Media Research Center observed, only CNN and Fox News were covering the allegations that China stole US military secrets under President Bill Clinton's watch. (However, it turned out to have been a problem since the Carter years.
- When Ingmar Guandique, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, was named a suspect in the murder of Chandra Levy (for which Rep. Gary Condit was cleared), only Dobbs labeled Guandique an illegal immigrant...in his exact words "a criminal illegal alien". Not even Fox News labelled Guandique an illegal, which got the ire of the MRC.
- Media Matters has documented http://mediamatters.org/search/tag/lou_dobbs&tab=research">numerous instances of misinformation by Dobbs.

3. Here at DU we like things simple: either you are in our box or you are not.
Therefore: Dobbs is not in our box. No nuances allowed.

9. When you've got threads saying KO and Rachel aren't really liberals.....
....there is no hope for a mostly misguided old fool like Mr. Dobbs who occasionally hits the stopped clock analogy now and again.

12. He's saying that Dobbs can't be put in a convenient box. I think Dobbs is
batshit crazy, but I do remember the pro worker, pro choice, and anti bush stances he took.

15. Yes, Dobbs isn't as numbskulled as the morons on Fux News
Edited on Thu Nov-12-09 06:39 PM by alp227
I mean, while Dobbs might've always been "anti-incumbent" throughout his career, O'Reilly, Hannity, Beck, Limbaugh, and the even worse goons of con media have been always, always, always dogmatically pro-conservative and anti-liberal no matter who was in power. And unlike Dobbs, they're even more hostile to the working class and pro-choicers, but all these figures share the same anti-immigrant sentiment.

17. I think Dobbs has some mental issues, nothing serious, but issues just the same.
He's not as crazy as Beck. That guy is a mess.

10. Get real! Dobbs has ALWAYS been a Republican shill - and his lies, corporate cheerleading
Edited on Thu Nov-12-09 03:11 PM by GreenTea
as well as Dobbs neocon opinions & flat out racist outdated logic does NOT make up for a few position Dobbs has taken to soften him up to people like yourself.

Dobbs is a republican, votes republican, is a corporate stooge, indoctrinating and seducing people to the evils of capitalism for the poor and socialism for the rich....Dobbs is an elitist who breathes elitism.

"I went out and I decided I was going to register as an Independent and I did so because I don't want my vote taken for granted by either political party and I want them representing the interests of the middle class of this country, the least represented group, the largest group in the country." ~ Lou Dobbs, 10/10/2006 program

11. If you'll note, each of those incidents he went counter to the party in charge
He has no beliefs of his own, except for constantly taking the opposing side in an effort to maintain viewers so he could keep himself employed.

If McCain had won last year Dobbs would likely have been (falsely) considered a voice on our side.

With Obama and Congress taking over he followed his normal pattern and went to the other side, but he went too far, ending up in Palin teabagger wingnut territory.

16. I'm NOT defending Dobbs' wacko birther beliefs
or anyone else who's stupid enough to buy the BS of the "Where's the Birth Certificate?" movement. However, I just want the DU community not to put Dobbs in the same trash can as the even more rabid reich wingers like O'Reilly and Hannity. Dobbs at least is sympathetic to the left at times.

20. No, he is not sympathetic to the left, he merely goes to his libertarian...
isolationist view, one of the myriad of sides of Dobbs, most of which are inherently racist. He is rabid, he isn't, however, a practicing neocon.

Dobbs is no more sympathetic to the left than he is to brown skinned people.

Peddle this crap at Free Republic.

23. DOBBS WAS THE ONLY VOICE AGAINST THE FREE TRADE CORPORATISM
that was rampant and unchallenged until KO came along on MSNBC.

Then he fell off the edge of the flat earth on the Birther deal and immigrants. Though he sometimes made reasoned arguments on immigration problems that exist.

24. Dobbs labeled himself as a conservative before he took up his populist flag
I prefer to just call him a moran. It's the best fit. Although he has figured out how to stay in the media spotlight and sell books. He does so by just checking which way the wind is blowing and going with it. I doubt if he really believes in half the shit he spews, although he certainly does appear to be a genuine bigot.
