Student Sells Goods At Cafe In Lotus

GEORGETOWN, Calif. -- A 10-year-old boy in rural El Dorado County has become a salsa sales star by using his mother's recipe.

Diego, a fourth-grade student in Georgetown, said he wanted to help out his family's finances.

"It's just that my mom was having trouble, and I just thought that her salsa was good and everybody likes salsa," he said.

Diego said he thought that if his salsa sales worked, then perhaps his mother wouldn't have to travel so much to find work, and then he'd be able to see her more.

"She'll actually sometimes work with us and sometimes we'll watch a movie and play and hang out, all that," Diego said.

Diego sells his salsa Sundays at the Sierra Rizing Cafe & Bakery in Lotus, where his mother, Paula, works as a cook. He brings in a dozen jars of salsa and sells them all quickly at $5 apiece.

1. eek.. now the health department will descend on his family kitchen
and probably shut them down:(

Home made goods are difficult to market under the radar..

Once they achieve a little notoriety, they often get shut down because of regulations..

I had a friend who ran afoul of the law for muffins she was supplying to a local restaurant.. The "food-cops" gave her a list of things she had to have ( a place separate from her family kitchen to start with) ..and she was out of business.. She was making about $100 a week, and the "renovations" she wouls have had to do, would have cost her thousands..

7. The kid has a Spanish given name, his mother has an English given name, and a French surname. And ..

.... you assumed he's a Latino? I used to have a roommate with a given name common in Mexico and Scottish surname. His parents just happened to be living in Mexico when he was born.

4. Drew Carey did a show about how none of the brand names we all know, would be in business ....
.... under the rules of the late 20th and the 21st century.

From cosmetics, to foods, to manufactured hard goods- the zoning laws, licensing laws, insurance, labor laws, etc.... we tend to think of big business as being against these laws. Someone astutely pointed out that you never hear McDonald's complain about the cost of a new requirement, because each and every expense is an obstacle the their present and future competition.

6. That's It Exactly
With unemployment where it is, corporations sucking out all of our souls, AND private investment groups on the lookout for opportunities, people are increasingly getting fed up with rules that hamper entrepreneurs in small business.

8. I wanted to open a stall at our weekend farmers market. Despite being run by a group...
... who would make Dharma's mother puke for their affected style, politics, and world view ; the first thing they wanted to know was if the goods being sold were produced in a licensed kitchen. I'm pretty sure that that's not their duty, that the flea market isn't assuming any liability for the products being sold. They certainly don't require the produce people to certify their goods. They'll let you sell lead painted shit from China as long as you sell something you make yourself. But you have to prove to them that you are a licensed kitchen?

5. Agreed, it's a shame there is no middle ground for small business. Although perhaps ones church
or some such might be willing to rent space?

9. Now that he and his mom's salsa has hit the news
It won't be long before someone files a suit against them for all sorts of food manufacturing 'infractions'.
