Adobe Systems announced Tuesday that it will cut 680 jobs, including about 300 in the Bay Area, in what analysts viewed as an effort to boost profit margins after a mostly lackluster year.
The cuts represent about 9 percent of the global work force at the San Jose-based software company, which makes editing, design and Web development tools. A spokeswoman said about 200 of the job cuts will occur at the company's San Jose offices and an additional 100 at other Bay Area locations.
Adobe, which has seen its sales sag during the recession, announced an earlier round of 600 layoffs in December 2008, and subsequently said it would close down North American operations for three weeks as a cost-cutting move during the current year.
The company disclosed the latest layoffs in a regulatory filing that said the move was intended "to align our costs in connection with our 2010 operating plan." ...........(more)
