Thanks for grossing us all out, Oprah!
Did Oprah *HAVE* to show us the woman who had her face ripped off by the chimpanzee? :wow:

(The clip was shown on our 5 pm news.)

Did you *HAVE* to show off your total lack of humanity and compassion? :eyes:

(I shouldn't have opened this thread, but I did.)

7. I do feel for her. But I DON'T want her paraded on Oprah for ratings.
I don't consider daytime TV to be a "See the Freak Show!"

Granted, on Springer it is, but I just feel Oprah exploited our "rubbernecking past the car accident" tendency.

12. What makes you think the woman was forced? Maybe she wanted society to accept her...
but how can that happen when someone with the sensitivity of a rock gets their underwear in a bunch for having to look at her?

Yeah, progressive compassionate human being you are. :sarcasm:

13. Perhaps she wanted to show her face.
Perhaps she wants to teach people that a person's character is far more important than looks.

Yes she is horribly disfigured, however I would hope that people would look past that.

21. Yes, she stated that she did
She stated that there was a "bounty" from the tabloids for a pic of her. She wanted to be in control so that no one could use her to make a cheap buck. She trusted Oprah and sought her out as the forum to reveal her face. And as far as the criticism of Oprah upthread, Oprah did not to my knowledge advertise the show, nor do she lead off with her story.

I was so hoping that there wouldn't be any threads like this here...ugh. But glad to see the majority of respondits like yourself in this thread.

23. Oprah's people most certainly did do advance publicity...
...I saw being proclaimed on TV earlier this morning.

And not leading with the "reveal" isn't a show of compassion but a marketing technique to keep viewers hanging on through the show.

...I refuse to take part in what I see as an equivalent to an old fashioned carnival "freak" show. It's done merely for shock value. I'm not into gawking at others for amusement.

22. Fuck Oprah , All this is is shock value for ratings
For what other reason was this done , it was not to alert people who keep wild animals as pets and what might happen , this has been know for many years.

I don't turn on the TV set because it is all for shock value then jump right into the ad's to sell the very products who promote this horror .

How is going on this show going to help this women in any way?

If Oprah is concerned then maybe she can pitch in some funds to help out rather than do this sort of this for ratings and that's all it is ever for.

She asked the little girl's doctor very insensitive questions right in front of her. Totally unecessary.

24. This reminds me of a story a couple years ago
when a bunch of people got a group of injured vets kicked out of a public pool they were using for physical therapy.

Apparently disfigured people have a moral obligation to ensure others don't have to shoulder the unbearable burden of seeing them.

Did Oprah ever stop to think how that woman would feel about millions of people seeing her on t.v. like that if she knew how she really looked?!

Un fucking believable!!! :grr:

34. You don't think the woman made a choice here?
Maybe you can stop trashing Oprah long enough to see that this woman had such great courage to stand up and force the world to accept her as she is. Maybe you can realize this woman has far more beauty inside her than you and a few others who are waving around your so-called offense at the audacity that she was on television in the first place.

At best you are disingenuous...at worst you are a hypocrite.

38. This Is Someone Who.....
We're talking about someone (Oprah) who is pressuring her people to get Jaycee Dugard on her show. Not someone who has a clear understanding that people who go through these things need to heal and get through coming to terms with it. I'm not surprised that Oprah is behaving like this and it is making me sick.

If Oprah was insensitive about the Mermaid Girl then I can only fathom that she is likely to get disgusting about Jaycee and heaven only knows what she plans on asking this other woman.

Edited on Thu Nov-12-09 01:44 PM by calico1
Charla Nash was aware that several tabloids were after her story and pictures of her so she chose to have Oprah interview her and reveal her face on Oprah on her own terms before the tabloids did.

36. The woman has no eyes anymore so she has no idea what she looks like and no hands so she can't even
really guess by touch. I didn't see it. I hear she seems to have a pretty good attitude about the whole thing. But I have to wonder whether she would have made the same choice, to appear on national television as a side show attraction, were she fully aware of what she now looks like. Sounds like she really got screwed over by the chimp owner, too.
