A friend of mine here in town does a financial radio show and today they put their usual chatter away to spend the bulk of their time honoring Vets, in particular WWII Vets. He got on the show because Dad had a chance to travel free of charge to the WWII Memorial with a group called Honor Flight and they were doing the show to highlight HF's work. In this case it's the local chapter but there are 80 chapters around the country that operate as non-profits with the goal of getting WWII Vets to the monument. As time passes, they'll move on to getting Korea and Vietnam vets there too. If, however, there's a pressing issue for Korea/Vietnam vets that makes their visit more urgent, they go to the head of the line now.
Bob Dole was the force behind creating the WWII Memorial and today, at 86, he still greets every vet group that visits. I didn't vote for the guy when I could and I'm not really sure I agreed with his politics but you've got to admire his commitment, rain or shine, to vets.
About 1.6million of the 16million who served in WWII are still alive but their numbers decrease nationally by 1,200 a day. There's probably an Honor Flight chapter in your area. It's always good to take these guys out for a meal or a drink and it's really wonderful to drop $10-$15 bucks in the mail to help them get to DC while they can still travel.
I don't know if it's kosher to make a pitch like this but it's a good cause and I'm biased.
If anyone's interested in the link, let me know and I'll post the mp3 link. Have a great day.
