Outrage! GOP won't join in Ft. Hood moment of silence!

When Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) convened a hearing of the Senate Subcommittee on Housing, Transportation, and Community Development yesterday, he asked everyone to join him in a moment of silence for the victims of the Ft. Hood shootings, and not a single Republican would join him!

Of course, that's probably because there wasn't a single Republican in attendance. (Gee, maybe I should have gone with that as a headline. Darn it all, it's Fox's world, we just live in it!)

And why wasn't there a single Republican in attendance, as near as I can make out at any point, throughout the two hours during which the committee sat?

Probably because of the subject of the hearing: "Ending Veterans' Homelessness."

Republicans, we know from Bill O'Reilly, do not believe there is such a thing as a homeless veteran. So they won't sit still for a hearing on something as absurd as that, nevermind that it was the day before Veterans' Day.

Watch the archived footage of the hearing for yourself, and see if you can spot so much as a scrap of paper on the table where the Republicans are supposed to be.

4. They don't need all of the American People
Just the closet Klansmen.

You know the Tea Baggers who also don't give a flying fuck about veterans, at least in my opinion they don't!

5. Guess what?
Veterans comprise 25% of the homeless population.

Veterans comprise 25% of the prison population. (Learned that today.)

7. When people hear the words ..
homeless veterans they tend to think only of male soldiers. But now we have female soldiers and a lot of them are among the homeless. Homeless women are in even more dire straits than homeless men because they are more likely to be raped, assaulted and savaged when they have to live on the streets or in shelters.

The Republicans mouth all of the right platitudes about supporting the military, but when it comes to caring for them during and after their terms of service they are never present. It is as if the Republicans view the soldiers as their very own crash test dummies. They use them while they can, but if the soldiers become injured or too traumatized to function they are on their own and surrounded by Republican scorn.

It is sickening and it has to stop. Whatever you think of war itself, the soldiers enlisted and offered their lives for what they believed in. Don't they deserve better treatment both on active duty and after discharge for taking a risk that not many people are willing to take?

14. The Republican party's reputation for supporting the military is based on defense spending.
Most people (including some RW veterans I know) think this translates into 'supporting the troops' and veterans. The fact is their defense spending is mostly about enriching defense contractors. I haven't seen Republicans support help for veterans at all. Maybe once or twice when a situation shamed them publicly but not usually.

8. The GOP is not really a party of joiners, they are more of a party of followers
These days anyway.
They are like people who don't know what to think about an issue, they wait to be told what to think.

11. Also, any mention of the military is a reminder of their role in fighting these
wars. Sorry, I mean to say, ".... the role they haven't played and don't want to play - 'cep from their armchairs." It must be kind of embarrassing running off at the mouth about supporting the troops, when they don't actually want to take part in the fighting.

This is a sign of the times, actually, isn't it? I've often railed at the role of the Norman (Norsemen/Viking) toffs in British and American history, but they had two saving graces: one they continued to cling to their Christian faith, albeit puzzlingly anomalous where money and status were concerned; and two, they remained essentially a warrior class, who would put their own lives on the line in their imperialist wars.

Today, in the UK and, indeed, Europe, (less so in the US, at least formally, though it's always been materialstic, de facto), secularism has largely displaced Christianity and continues to attack it. But as regards fighting in wars, the Republicans have shown their true colours. Like our Nulabor(c)*ites, faithless, secular trimmers, with an eye to the main chance. Our NeoConservatives....? Well, It would be best just to draw a veil over them.

*Must never forget the copyright sign.

13. I called
Corker, Demint, and Gregg.

The only office that would give me a half-assed answer was Gregg's. It was that he was traveling to New Hampshire.

Every time I see something like this OP, I call. I try not to be hateful (doesn't always work), but we must let them know that people are paying attention to their bullshit political stunts. It was fun to point out to Corker's staffer that he made this quote yesterday.

“One of the greatest honors I have as a U.S. senator is the opportunity to meet with so many of our men and women in uniform and their families. It is incredibly moving to be in their presence and see the work they are doing on a daily basis,” said Corker. “I am always tremendously impressed with their professionalism and often find myself emotionally overwhelmed. All Americans are deeply indebted to our military men and women, past and present, for their service to our country. Veterans Day should not only be a time to honor our veterans and to thank them and their families for their service and sacrifice. It should also be a day that inspires all of us to be better Americans and work to make our country better.”

With a 10 minutes and the internet tubes you can also be a thorn in a hypocritical republicans side.
