Fox News is Going Down - MAJOR Bust by Daily Show

Just when you thought it couldn't be any more obvious that Fox News is a Dime-Store Propaganda Lie Factory, there's this:

VIDEO:
http://mediamatters.org/mmtv/200911100063

In the above clip from tonight's show, Fox News is caught using file footage of the better-attended Sept. 12 Tea-Party rally as if it were from the most recent Michelle Bachmann low-turnout event on the Capitol steps. We owe Jon Stewart and his crew an enormous debt of gratitude for breaking this story.

They used clips from a decade ago to make 9/12 look bigger and then, used 9/12 footage to make this latest charade look bigger. Do you think they are trying to convince people that there are more people opposed to this then there actually are?

FOX asserted that there are no written rules against distorting news in the media. They argued that, under the First Amendment, broadcasters have the right to lie or deliberately distort news reports on public airwaves.

Lying is Fox's Constitutional Right!

57. Those folks are hopeless
However, one can hope that as more and more evidence accumulates, the bigger outlets (ABC, NBC, CBS, NYT, WaPo) might come to realize they shouldn't take Faux and their "news" seriously.

After all, without Faux, the Gore win might not have been invalidated.

72. You are right and I was justly chastised for this comment when I came home tonight
to find no less than 3 of my facebook friends have this video posted to their profiles. I know there are people (god, my poor pathetic mother among them) who watch nothing but fox but hopefully, as you say, as more evidence accumulates and as people are exposed to the truth via alternative outlets, the bigger outlets will follow.

(Of course, I've been hoping for that for the last 9 years so it's getting harder and harder to believe... :) )

why do they need to artificially inflate their numbers with doctored videos and outright lies? I hope all this leads to an irreversible schism among conservatives - one that cannot be mended by Election Day. I want a teabagger facing a neocon in every district in the country next year!

Edited on Wed Nov-11-09 10:31 AM by Downtown Hound
Are you asking if Fox News is broadcast over the air at all, or if individual clips of it are by being broadcast through other Fox affiliates that are broadcast over the air?

In the first case, no, Fox News itself isn't broadcast over the air at all, therefore the FCC has no regulatory powers over them. As for the second, I have no idea if individual clips of Fox News material have made it onto local newscasts that are owned by Fox and broadcast over the air. But if they have then you're getting into a whole bunch of legal wrangling about the kinds of agreements that are worked out to allow that broadcast to go forward. Is it a violation of FCC rules? I couldn't say. All I could tell you is that it would take hours of research to find the answer to that, and the final answer could very well be NO and you will have wasted your time.

The area where I have always believed that Fox News is vulnerable to legal action and where I would like to see some activists and some daring lawyers go is that of false advertising. Fox News advertises itself as "Fair and Balanced." Well, I personally feel that it would be quite easy to prove in a court of law that they're not, the incident mentioned in the OP being only one solid example of this amongst a whole shitload of solid examples. So if Fox News really is a Republican propaganda organ, and they advertise themselves as fair and balanced, then they have lied to the American people and are guilty of false advertising.

That is actually a case I think we could win against them.

33. I was taking about clips from their 'Cable News' getting down to local broadcasts.
If that is the case, then the FCC does have authority over them.

Seems kind of hard to imagine that their local stations, do not act as a satellite for their national (cable) news, since other stations get news clips from their broadcasters.

41. In all of the local Fox newscasts that I've seen
They use their own material with their own reporters. Where they get the feed for their national stories, that's what anybody interested in taking this up would have to look up. And then you'd have to look up whatever legal arrangements were made, and then you'd have to find out if any of it in any way fell under the jurisdiction of the FCC. That's a lot of work. But to anyone wishing to take it on, more power to them.

However, I'm willing to bet you that Fox already has all this shit covered. I'm sure they've already thought of this and have worked it to where the FCC can't do shit to them, at least as far as not adhering to their guidelines goes.

but so do all local news stations. Fox doesn't own local affiliates. They have contracts with stations to air their prime and sports coverage. The only time when fox news is on a local station is during something like the debates or election coverage during prime-time.

That's why occasionally your local fox station will suddenly become a WB affiliate or a MyNetwork TV station or 2 stations will switch their affiliations.

...all that would happen is that they would get a fine and be ordered to stop claiming to be Fair and Balanced. The phrase would quietly disappear from Fox's lineup under the guise of "makeover" and none of the media outlets would bother reporting the true reason for their makeover.

Edited on Wed Nov-11-09 06:03 PM by GreenTea
do the republicans who watch and continue to give Fox "news" the top ratings consistently on cable...Shit, even liberals on DU watch Fox instead of supporting progressives on MSNBC....

Fox loves the publicity, to them it just increases their ratings....like when Beck lost all those advertisers...Fox didn't give a fuck, as people here on DU predicted, that Beck was "going down"....instead Beck's ratings went up and he's still rolling along...and he'll be there for as long as he wants, laughing & raking in tens of millions of dollars for himself.

Some people just don't get it about Fox news, most do know Fox isn't a news organization, that they are republican propaganda, sponsored & paid for by republican corporate interest, But what they seem to ignore is Fox wouldn't care if they lost money (corporate fascist would absorb the losses just to keep Fox going) as long as they keep that republican propaganda machine going, (but they don't have to because Fox makes money).

And most of the other corporate media, as well as the republican sheep believe every word Fox spews out as they gives Fox the benefit of the doubt as a legitimate news organization and believing that Fox is really news just being attacked by liberal lies.

Fox provides the bullshit and people including millions of progressive watch the car wreck and can't turn away from watching it, it becomes entertainment and brainwashing for the lazy & uninformed.

Fox is NOT "going down" as people have predicted every couple of month's with each new outrageous story, gimmick and lie....Fox will be around for as long as they choose.

Quit watching Fox "news". - One can always get video from a number of sources, Fox' news bullshit each day...Huffington Post, Raw Story. Crooks & Liars, BartCop, & even DU's daily video feeds...no one needs to watch to "see what the enemy is saying" that's complete bullshit....give your time to progressives for will also keep you informed about Fox like Schultz, Olbermann & Maddow on MSNBC....Just click on their head.... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3096434/

The "poutrage" should be about the fact the the ONLY coverage this got from the M$M was a laugh & giggle about The Daily Show's "catch".. Where was theM$M? Are they really so stooooopid that no one on their "hugh" staffs noticed?

They are now content to let TDS cover the "dangerous" stuff, and then they roll the clip and guffaw with each other..:puke:

Edited on Wed Nov-11-09 11:10 PM by Turborama
Unsurprisingly, he says it was a "mistake". How can it have been a mistake? It was supposedly 'live' footage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0bzYL2kAiU

I saw this live on Faux - they showed that footage at the time of the event as well - and was hoping TDS would pick up on it. Hopefully other networks will pick up it now.

88. Here's the Sept. 12 crowd estimate info from Wikipedia.
Faux was lying then as they are now.

Conservative bloggers, stating estimates reported in the news were liberal media bias, asserted the number was much higher and estimated between 1 and 2 million people had attended the event.<16><32><33> PolitiFact, The Christian Science Monitor, the Los Angeles Times, and other news outlets reported that some of these bloggers, such as Michelle Malkin, had originally distributed photos from a 1997 Promise Keepers march that made the 2009 march look more highly attended.<34><32><35> Adding difficulty to crowd estimation, a section of the National Mall near the Washington Monument was dedicated to the 24th annual National Black Family Reunion on September 12.<25>

Matt Kibbe, president of FreedomWorks, the organizer of the event, stated on stage that ABC News had reported 1 million to 1.5 million protesters in attendance. ABC News later published an article saying that they were misquoted by Kibbe, and went on to report that 60,000 to 70,000 had attended the event, citing the unofficial D.C. Fire Department number.<18> After comparing photographs of Saturday's protest with previous events, FreedomWorks revised their crowd estimate to be between 600,000 and 800,000.<16><36> Pete Sepp, a spokesman for the National Taxpayers Union, one of the organizations that sponsored the march, said the group estimated the crowd at 75,000 in the morning and from 200,000 and 300,000 as the day went on.<16> Farouk El-Baz, a Boston University research professor and expert on crowd estimation, said his informal research from media coverage indicated 75,000 as the peak attendance.<16>

102. While they further their Nazi tactics by falsely accusing Democrats of same
This all began, of course (Roger Ailes, etc.), with these same tactics used in the Reagan administration.

During the Reagan administration we knew an elderly woman who escaped Nazi Germany. She insisted that Reagan administration tactics and the tone in the country at the time was exactly like Nazi Germany before her escape. She has since passed away. If she was still with us she would see than now it's only gotten worse.

103. It has gotten worse...
History repeats if you let it. This country has it's head up it's ass. Too busy watching American Idol to read a history book. Thinking, "Oh this could never happen to us!" The only good thing the NAZIS did, was to leave the world an example of what not to be...too bad we choose to ignore all the signs that the German people once failed to see in time to prevent a Hitler.

Welcome to DU BTW.

25% of the left know this.

25% of the right do also and couldn't give a crap.

It's the 50% of the main stream Americans that we're after: The ones that need billions of dollars to be convinced to vote 'the correct way' every election cycle that this and every battle is fought. We won this one but already there are new ones that need manned in the trenches.

Thanks Jon!
