The Florida Government Has Misplaced 18,000 Buildings -- Yes, Buildings
<snip>

Losing a single building is completely understandable, right? But 18,000 buildings? How could any one lose track of 18,000 buildings? Well, the Florida Government has done just that, and has no idea how much it will cost to track down thousands of missing taxpayer-owned buildings.

The problem came when someone realized no one had a complete list of all the tax payer owned buildings. Linda South, Secretary of the Florida Department of Management Services, knows where the 115 buildings her department is directly responsible for are, but went around asking other departments something to the effect of, "It's 10 o'clock. Do you know where your buildings are?"

What she was able to find out is that the state owns just under 18,000 buildings, but didn't know where many of them are, if they still exist, or how much they're worth.

Her department doesn't have the manpower to track down all the buildings, and hopes to outsource the job. Problem is, she has no idea how much that will cost.

I hate when that happens.

3. What?
Ok. I know that around here, if someone is using your property for a certain length of time, and you don't object, ownership can be declared for the person who's using it.

For example: We are supposed to have a two foot buffer between our fences and the property line, officially. If your neighbor puts a fence right up against YOURS, those two feet can end up being theirs if you just tolerate it for a particular time period (not sure how long).

Could all this "public" property now be in private hands? D'ya think?

18. You have figured out the state.
It's all about Libertarian chaos, here. The people with the least scruples take over government, and the only ones who have less scruples than they do, are the attorneys who consult them.

It happens because there is no State Agency in Florida that will stop them or hold them accountable.

16. Very strange
From the article: "What she was able to find out is that the state owns just under 18,000 buildings, but didn't know where many of them are, if they still exist, or how much they're worth."

They own 18,000 buildings. Doesn't even say how many were misplaced. Could be two for all the article tells us.

The state of Florida is a perpetual graft machine. Between the politically connected attorneys who customarily represent public and private sector; and ethically challenged elected officials who expect those corrupt attorneys to tell them that it's okay for them to cut corners.

It really is time to replace Norm Wolfinger. The State Attorney's Office, is just too impotent or too complicit to change anything.

On Edit: Shit, I don't even know for sure. Is Norm Wolfinger still running the department? It keeps such a low profile, I forget it exists.

If you live in Florida, I mean no offence, but the state government there is incredibly stupid.

Amazing.
