Wow, a prowler was just shot not far from my house...
I'm listening to it unfold on the scanner right now..

There was a call came in about 45 minutes ago about someone attempting to steal a car from a residence. The caller advised that the prowler ran off into the woods, carrying a rifle and a pistol.

A few minutes ago, the same person called back in to 9-1-1 saying he heard two gunshots down the road from his house. A few seconds later another call came through 9-1-1 with the caller stating he had just shot a prowler and he was laying on the ground. All the on-duty cops in our county are on their way there, as well as a few off duty officers and detectives. The Rescue Squad is on the way too, with Life Flight standing by. I doubt they'll be able to launch the bird if need be, it's pouring down rain here, and has been for nearly 22 hours straight...

Just came through, prowler, 25 y/o white male, shot in the chest with a shotgun.. he is still breathing at this time...

I'll be listening in...

1. You can hear 911 calls?
What type of scanner do you have and how did you get it?

3. It would be a police scanner and they sell them at Radio Shack and other places...
If you Google them, you will find em.... A good one could cost you $500.00 plus.

8. I have a Bearcat scanner; they're available for under $100.
Ebay sells them for much less. Mine picks up police transmissions, sheriff's dept., fire dept., rescue squad and more. I don't have it on very often but coincidentally do have it on now because there's a flood watch in effect for this area.

5. No, I hear the Police and Rescue on the scanner..
I just live in a *real* small town, and the dispatchers, as well as the cops, are pretty open when they speak on the radios. The dispatcher pretty much repeats verbatim what the caller is telling them..

6. Depends on the shell load and the range he was shot at.
But the odds aren't good.

7. Life Flight from 3 different districts grounded due to weather...
I just heard the guy moaning in the background as the EMT was talking to dispatch. He was shot in the left arm and left side of his chest...

11. How far away is the closest hospital?
Those life flights often make such a difference.

12. Especially in a rural area where there's no trauma center
Edited on Wed Nov-11-09 12:57 AM by Lone_Star_Dem
A lot of smaller rural hospitals aren't able to handle trauma like a gunshot wound.

16. The closest hospital is about 15 miles away... Life Flight usually goes to either
Erlanger in Chattanooga, about 60 miles south.. or UT Hospital in Knoxville, about 60 miles north.

I live out in the middle of nowhere :-)

"Meigs Homeowner Shoots Burglary Suspect

Updated: Nov 11, 2009 2:30 PM EST
UPDATE WEDNESDAY NOV 11TH 2PM

MEIGS COUNTY, TN (WRCB) -- Meigs County authorities say a crime spree ended when a homeowner shot a burglary suspect.

Sheriff's investigators say late Tuesday night 25 year old Jacob Layton broke into cars outside three houses on North No Pone Road. One of the neighbors heard noise. When he went outside to investigate, he heard a sound coming from his shed. The home owner says he walked up to the shed door and saw Layton. The homeowner told him not to move but Layton raised a pistol so the homeowner shot him,

The homeowner again told him not to move. But apparently Layton didn't learn the first time. Investigators say he again raised his pistol up and the homeowner again shot him. "
