1. I believe they've probably seen something they can't identify.
Do I believe the thing they saw is of otherworldly origin? No.

28. I had a 3 second sighting
It was summer, evening, pretty, clear, blue sky - no clouds. As I was putting my key in to open my car the door I look up in the sky. What do I see?

Very high in the sky.

A black rectangle about the size of a cigerette pack.

One second I site the UFO.

Second second I'm sure it's there.

Third second it is gone, the sky is blue where the black rectangel was.

I get in my car, go buy dinner, go back to work and don't tell anyone.

I don't think I have ever told this to anyone but the wife.

I'm at the state that if they don't publicly land and "take me to your leader" - I'm beyond interested.

Although there was a history channel done on UFO's that was very though provoking.

44. Exactly.
I believe they've seen something and were unable to identify it, so technically I guess they saw a UFO, but I'm extremely doubtful that it's from elsewhere in the universe.

2. What makes you think that the sighting of a UFO is so uncommon?
There are many, many reports of sightings of UFO's throughout history.

This poll is obviously pointed in DK's direction again... Get over it cause many on DU happen to side with Dennis, and I am one of those.

for people to see things they cannot identify, and I have no problem believing them. It's the attempt at identification that gets shaky

7. People believe me, usually until the moment I start describing it.
Problem is, it's so hard to describe that it begins to seem fake. Kind of the same reaction I had when I was looking at it in the sky. It seemed very unreal.

If someone told me they saw something they could not identify in the sky, why would I doubt them?

I'm sure they saw something flying they couldn't identify. I however doubt it was aliens or the like.

13. I think your question is, perhaps phrased wrong.
If you ask "Do you believe someone when they've told you that they've seen a UFO?" the answer is yes. The fact that they think they saw a U.F.O. does not mean there was actually a U.F.O. it just means that the person, in their mind, thinks they saw a U.F.O. Hell, if you see pink Elephants climbing up the walls, that's your reality. It may not be mine but it is no less real for you. If, on the other hand, you were to ask "If, when someone tells you that they've seen a UFO, do you think there actually was a U.F.O? That requires a different response. First, if we take the premise literally, the idea that someone saw something flying around that they couldn't identify would not be surprising at all. If, on the other hand, they told you that they saw an alien spacecraft from another galaxy, well, I would tend to discount their credibility.

And, you can tell just by the fact that I've bothered to answer this question that I'm pretty bored.

17. Yes, but it took independent corroboration.
When I was in high school (in 1959 or 60 as I recall) I was visiting a friend and we were up late watching a Three Stooges marathon on TV. My friend's dad drove to the store to pick up some chips and soda. He came running into the house a half an hour later shouting that he had seen a flying saucer.

Thinking he was just pulling our leg, we laughed told him we didn't believe him. He insisted, but we still didn't believe. Finally he drew some sketches and wrote down a detailed description of a solid metallic disk, silvery on the top side and glowing greenish on the underside. He described the exact path he had seen it take as it skimmed over the neighborhood literally just above treetop level before dipping below the trees in the direction of the school 4 or 5 blocks away.

The next day there was an annoyingly tongue-in-cheek item in the newspaper describing the same thing he described, and several other people from the neighborhood independently reported having seen an object with the same characteristics traveling the same path. Most people reported that rather than zipping away, it dipped below the tree line and was lost from sight. Several people who lived close to the school reported that it briefly dipped to nearly ground level over the school yard before vanishing in a brief vertical green streak. They described it as having a diameter about half the width of the school football field.

18. Do you believe what someone says that supported the
Military Commissions Act? Or the get out jail immunity bill for telecoms? Or that Bush/Cheney didn't commit impeachable offenses? When you complain as much about those members of the Democratic Party, inform us. I know you like to stir trouble against progressives. But those Democrats are not good Democrats with stable minds in my world and never will be. And I will never walk with them.

A 7 ft tall black dude took off all his clothes and ran through the biz district at work today. Well actually he calmly strolled down one of the busiest avenues in town... but still.

Does that count for a UFW - Unidentified Flapping Weiner?

True story.

As far as what they've actually seen, I'm more of an "open door skeptic."

I mean... the sun MIGHT rise in the west tomorrow. It MIGHT... There's no guarantee the Earth's rotation won't reverse overnight. The possibility always exists...

indifferently,

33. well, I remember when I was about ten
lived in Phoenix. My uncle was a Greyhound driver-one route he drove was from Phoenix to Palm Springs. He told us that he was driving in the middle of the desert going towards Palm Springs with passengers and he saw something in the sky, and so did some of the passengers. The bus started acting weird, and the next thing he knew, the bus stalled and the lights went out.

That was back in the sixties. I don't know, should I believe my uncle and the passengers are lying?

34. oh yeah, I remember the debates in 2004 with Russert
Russert asking Kucinich about UFOs-imagine he didn't ask any of the other candidates-What a surprise to see an article after that debate of retired military officers wanting an investigation of UFOs. Hey, they must be crazy too. Pilots have reported seeing UFO's-it doesn't mean they're little spacemen-it means it's something that cannot be identified or explained.

43. What a great account of a sighting! According to some on DU
those who have heard stories from reputable people along with eyewitnesses are to be marginalized as being loons. I say bs to that!
I know what I saw and it was spectacular. It so happened, without knowledge of it at the time, a couple of years prior, there were many well documented sightings in my area of the same type of craft. There was one that was witnessed by hundreds of rush hour drivers on a local parkway. Many of them got out of their cars to watch it, making a parking lot out of the road.

35. A whole fleet!
I was out night fishing in my boat about twenty years ago and looked up in the clear star-filled night sky and noticed movement. Trying to determine what I was seeing, I strained to see a whole fleet of crafts, which had to be huge due to the fact I could see them. They were almost invisible, like they were almost being "cloaked". Not believing what I saw, I looked again...they were still there!
The next day, I looked in the papers to see if anyone else had seen them. Not a word.

I just kinda wrote it all off over the years, but you don't forget shit like that. There weren't any multi-colored lights flashing or radical movements of these craft. They just proceeded slowly and eventually disappeared to the eye altogether. I still wonder if I actually saw what I saw. It was so surreal. This is the first time I have ever told anyone about it. I figured folks would think I was crazy. I have tried to dismiss it as my having fell asleep and dreaming it all up...but it was so real, and the images are still in my memory.

Did it happen? At this point, I don't really know. And, I figure it really doesn't matter since I have absolutely no proof or other witnesses. It's just one of those things you think of occasionally and say "Hmmmmm?"
