Judge denies "concerned" parents: allows high school production of "Laramie Project" to go on

James Perkins, foreground, attends a court hearing today in which District Judge David Wall ruled that Green Valley High School may present two theatrical performances. Perkins was among a group of parents seeking to stop this weekend's performance of "The Laramie Project" and the musical "Rent" early next year.

District Judge David Wall this morning denied a request by some Green Valley High School parents seeking to stop this weekend's performance of "The Laramie Project" and the musical "Rent" early next year.

Both plays have homosexual characters and deal with the theme of tolerance.

The judge ruled that the plays were voluntary for participants and audiences, and that "it's a matter of choice."

"We're ecstatic," said student Amanda Smith, 16, who plays a lead role in "Rent."

Smith said the theater students felt relieved that the plays could go on. She said they feel like they're doing something important.

8. Or just bigoted assholes...
He looks a little old to be a "parent". I guess I could be wrong, though.

6. Thanks for posting, but I hate the "concerned" in quotes these days...
It's as if to say, officially, that from now on, no one that complains about anything I agree with can have a legitimate concern. It's officially faux outrage cause I said so.

9. Sorry. Just reminds me of the Concerned Women of America etc.
'Concerned' seems to have been co-opted by nuts.

7. If one parent wants to let their kid act in it...
...and another parent wants to let their kid watch it, where does the third parent get off trying to stop it from happening? Either they support the rights of parents to raise their kids how they see fit, or they don't. And if they don't...well...we need to have a conversation about that whole homeschooling thing...

10. "Cause it's my TAXPAYER dollars payin' for the lights an' such, so that gives me say!"
That's the response you'll get.

It's always about "my taxpayer dollars".

13. My old high school
My old high school did RENT 2 weeks ago. It was great. The school and the parents were very supportive.

The high school version of the show is slightly different. The gay couples are not allowed to kiss, which is ridiculous in my opinion, but that's how it is.

I think if people don't approve of the musical, they do not need to go see it.
