Mother tried to shield baby in fatal SC shootings

WALTERBORO, S.C. – A South Carolina mother fruitlessly tried to shield her 20-month-old toddler from a barrage of bullets in a drive-by shooting that killed the baby and two adults and injured at least five others, relatives said Tuesday.

Relatives said the victims were playing cards Monday night in the front yard of the small beige bungalow in the small town of Walterboro when a car pulled up and opened fire.

"Everybody was sitting outside. Instead of shooting at one guy, they shot at everybody," said Dominique Adams, 21, a cousin who lives nearby. "The mother, she tried to shield the baby, but the bullet went through the baby's head and through the mother's arm."

Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey said Charles Kittrell, 45, died at the scene. The baby, Shaniyah Burden, and Christopher Powell, 21, died at hospitals.

2. Better you should hate the soulless freak who killed that baby instead
Blaming an inanimate object for that murder won't get you far. I want this cold-blooded killer behind bars NOW.

4. sure, you always want them locked up after the fact, but God forbid prevention
should entail the least kind of restriction on the proliferation of Lord God Gun....

6. You cannot prevent crime simply by forbidding inanimate objects
Crime prevention starts at home. We need to raise better kids.

7. I have a question.
Can you explain how prohibition is going to prevent murdering assholes like these in the OP from acquiring firearms? Its not a rhetorical question. I am genuinely curious on how prohibition is suppose to prevent criminal scum instead of enriching the black market. Not to mention eliminating law abiding people from having an effective means of self protection.

18. Your answer is non responsive
Can you explain how prohibition is going to prevent murdering assholes like these in the OP from acquiring firearms? You won't answer because you know prohibition never stops the black market, it only enriches it.

Now to respond to your question even though its purely meant to be sarcasm. The way I and thousands of others have protected themselves. I myself was a victim of an attempted home invasion several years ago and the only reason I am still here today is because I was armed. These stories rarely if ever get reported.

Now, your turn. Can you articulate how prohibition is going to prevent murdering assholes like in the OP from acquiring firearms through the black market?

20. so banning Tommy guns, for example, was a terrible idea, because it changed nothing?
What the hell then -- bring on the rocket launchers!

Right?

21. What a surprise, another non responsive answer.
Edited on Tue Nov-10-09 07:23 PM by Xicano
Its obvious you have nothing but red herrings and the reason isn't difficult. Because you know you can't answer the question. Again I'll answer your lame attempt to divert attention away from the question instead of trying to throw up red herrings.

Tommy guns are not banned, they're regulated under class III. Rocket launchers are indiscriminate explosive devices. The photo below is from Switzerland where military issued fully automatic combat weapons are kept at home. I don't seem to be hearing any news about drive by shootings or any other gun violence in Switzerland, do you? So the photo below illustrating Switzerland gun policy impeaches your red herring.

Now, how about answering the question instead of trying to dodge it by posting red herrings? Can you articulate how prohibition is going to prevent murdering assholes like in the OP from acquiring firearms through the black market like every other prohibited marketable item?

22. Do you agree Tommy guns should be regulated? Is any regulation of a weapon ever a good idea?
Edited on Tue Nov-10-09 07:47 PM by villager
Though you keep dodging my questions -- and projecting that dodging on to me -- I'll give you another try, though mostly I find it's hopeless.

Though you *do* seem to agree with Switzerland's strict permitting procedures!

It's a step. Oh -- and when you're not busy rhapsodizing about your beloved guns, try to spare a thought -- if even for a second -- for the mother and child who were shot today.

25. And still you dodge answering the question.
It was the fist question asked here and you still dodge answering it. Like I said, its obvious you dodge answering it because you can't answer it without agreeing to the premise of the question.

And as far as my dodging any of your questions. I've addressed every single one of your questions despite your avoiding mine. As far as this next question by you, I'll be glad to answer it as soon as you stop avoiding the question I posted several posts ago.

As far as your point about sparing a thought for this poor family. Try scrolling down to post #13 and you'll see I posted a thought for this poor family five hours ago. You just didn't see it because you're showing you see only what you want to see.

Now again, if you answer the first question that was raised instead of trying to inject red herrings I'll answer yet another one of your questions.

Edited on Tue Nov-10-09 08:02 PM by villager
Nor will you address Switzerland's strict handgun regulation -- which, since you laud that country, I assume you support?

I asked if you agree there should be any regulation -- your "answer" was simply to note there was regulation.

You dare not say whether you think this is a good idea.

27. NO... I'll be glad to answer yet ANOTHER one of your questions just as soon as you stop avoiding my
one question.

You're little tricks you're trying to play aren't going to work. Anybody can easily read all the previous posts and see you're the only one being evasive.

Again, answer the first question and I'll be glad to answer yet another one of yours.

Edited on Tue Nov-10-09 09:22 PM by Hangingon
Just anecdotal, but most of them are not eligible to purchase guns. Put the BATFE on straw purchases and rogue gun dealers. NOt to dodge the question, but tommy guns" are regulated. And, again anecdotally, I don't hear to much about fully automatic weapons in the local drive bys.

13. Since this probably didn't last but a few seconds
Probably what happened was as the mother was grabbing the baby and turning her body to shield it, thats when the baby got hit.

So sad. I feel so sorry for the family.

she'd passed on too...doesn't that sound strange? I just hate imagining the grief she is feeling now. Unbearable.
