Female GOP Candidate Hits Boxer For Wanting To Be Called “Senator”

Fun times out in California: Carly Fiorina, the businesswoman who hopes to be the GOP challenger to Senator Barbara Boxer next year, has unveiled a new attack line:

She’s faulting Boxer for wanting to be called “Senator,” not “ma’am,” hitting Boxer with a new Web ad and a new Website devoted entirely to this criticism.

It’s a reference to a widely-noted exchange Boxer had earlier this year with a Brigadier General at a hearing. After he called her “ma’am,” Boxer rejoined: “Do me a favor, could you say `Senator,’ instead of `ma’am’? It’s just a thing. I worked so hard to get that title.”

You can watch that exchange right here, on the Fiorina campaign’s new Web site devoted to this line of criticism, CallMeBarbara.com. And here’s Fiorina’s new Web ad, running on sites like Drudge, hitting Boxer on this:

In a statement accompanying the release of the new site and ad, the Fiorina campaign blasted the exchange as a sign of Boxer’s “egotistical style.”

It’s true that the exchange didn’t reflect particularly well on Boxer. But hitting her for wanting to be called “Senator” perhaps doesn’t reflect that well on Fiorina, either. After all, this doesn’t seem like the most pressing concern of voters. What’s more, Fiorina is an accomplished woman in her own right.

I am so looking forward to Carly going down in flames like all the workers she nixed at HP. I don't like people talking about MY Senator!

19. OK, how about disgraced and useless ex CEO that nearly destroyed HP?
Yep, that shall be your title, Carly. Everyone knows you're a disgrace.

3. I'm wondering what her reaction would be if she were called Mr. Fiorina.
Let me guess, proper titles are only important some of the time? She needs to be nailed on this hard. What a stupid fuck.

4. When Fiorina was ousted from HP, she blamed sexism for why she had to leave.
Edited on Tue Nov-10-09 01:45 PM by Writer
Now she's supporting treating a sitting senator in a sexist way. Carly - and yes I'll call you by your first name, despite the fact that doing so marginalizes you - is a hypocrite.

6. So.....if a woman ears her doctorate, it's egotistical if she wants to be called "Doctor"??
Edited on Tue Nov-10-09 01:48 PM by Avalux
And how many women Senators are there? Boxer has every right to want to be called Senator, I would too.

Fiorina is a loser; what a ridiculous argument. x(

7. Didn't Dubya publically chide a reporter for calling him "Sir" instead of "Mr. President"?
So, by default, is Fiorina admitting that Bush ruled with "egotistical style", right?

15. Yes indeed.
Destroyed the company but got herself a golden parachute with enough money to fund her campaign.

Maybe Republicans will admire her for that.

16. Or, Carly "never call her senator" Fiorina and I never will.
One more vote for Barbara Boxer. And, I am a brest cancer survivor and did not like Ms. Fiorina when asked how she paid for her medical care stated that it was paid for by her husband's insurance. How nice for her and no concern for those who do not have husbands with great health insurance or their own insurance because they can't work anymore and their Cobra benefits have run out. I think the health insurance issue alone will keep Ms. Fiorina from ever being called "Senator".

Perfect example of promoting Boxer's best "image moment" and rallying her base while doing nothing for Fiorina's own campaign.

14. Fiorina is deliberately insulting Boxer, as is anyone who pointedly

avoids addressing her as such when she is working in that capacity. The General and Ms. Fiorina don't get to plead ignorance, either, AFAIAC.

I get this once in a while at work: the occasional new client who tries to call me by my first name, or by my last name (with no title at all), or Miss kestrel, or even Mrs. kestrel, lol(I'm single). I gently suggest either Dr. (my first name) or Dr. (my last name). I worked VERY hard for the title, it's how my staff refers to me on the job, and how I refer to myself on the job.

Certain long-established clients that I am on a friendly personal basis with of course call me by my first name. And when I am NOT at work, using my professional title seems, well, pompous and silly.

17. Okay, let's get this straight...
When Carly took command of HP, they made relatively small amounts of premium test equipment which commands good margins per unit, and relatively large amounts of the kind of computers the joke about losing money on every unit but making up for it in volume was written for. Under her stewardship, they got rid of the high-end products (admittedly this was the time when everyone was looking at Windows computers as a serious cash cow, not realizing anyone can set up a factory to make Windows computers in the spare bedroom--witness the debacle that happened when SGI decided to drop Unix for Windows*) and kept the cheap shit. Now Carly wants to be senator? Great...

* Before the earth had completely cooled, SGI came out with a couple of really nice Windows NT machines. Publish Magazine did a head-to-head between the cheap SGI and the top-of-the-line Mac. Their conclusion was you could do a lot of work on the SGI, but for the same money you could do twice as much work on Macs because you could buy two Macs for the same price as one SGI.

The very nerve of a Senator wanting to be called a Senator.

As you mentioned, it sounds like she's got nothing and maybe even less than nothing.

Edited on Tue Nov-10-09 05:41 PM by BeHereNow
No serious debate about Boxer's work as a Senator in our state or the country.
Just a personal attack on her professionalism and respect for the office she holds.

What an asshole.
Reminds me of some of the behavior I see on DU.
Attack the messenger to distract attention
from the significance of the message.

But since I have elected to ignore those people, I don't
have to read their equally ridiculous attacks.

Ashamed to see it in my state though, at this level
of office.

Boxer is a tremendous Senator and deserves to be
properly addressed for the office she holds.
