Jihad code change to challenge al Qaeda
The most telling change is as follows:

The code's most direct challenge to al Qaeda is this: "Jihad has ethics and morals because it is for God. That means it is forbidden to kill women, children, elderly people, priests, messengers, traders and the like. Betrayal is prohibited and it is vital to keep promises and treat prisoners of war in a good way. Standing by those ethics is what distinguishes Muslims' jihad from the wars of other nations."

1. This Has Long Been The Consensus Of Pre-Dominant Scholarly Schools, Ma'am
Not to diminish the value and significance of this development, of course.

3. It's good to see this being said in public - on CNN no less
This has always been the case for mainstream Muslims (even the very religious) at least all the Muslims I've known. I hope it's reassuring to the elements of our population who suffer from irrational fears of their Muslim brethren.

4. Says nothing about forbidding killing of others in the name of Islam. How is this good?

5. It won't matter. Read "Inside The Jihad"
It's written by a Moroccan-French immigrant who went to Pakistan in the mid-90's and ended up an an AQ training camp. What he describes, over and over again, are people who are pretty much just thugs using religion as a cover for their thuggishness, and who incorporate just enough religion in their activities to provide moral cover.

The writer, who was NOT a devout Muslim, but who wanted to be trained so he could fight in Chechnya, was appalled at the hypocrisy.

6. This reminds of a Globe and Mail a lengthy article written soon after the Russians
left Afganistan in the 80s. The journalist made an observation that after that war it would be difficult for men and boys to return to farming which in Afganistan is brutal and tedious. She said many seemed to have had lost the desire to return to that way of life and she believed many problems would arise in the future to due to this attitude shift. Even though I was rather young at the time and knew only vague details about the war, that comment made made a deep impression on me, I've never forgotten it. It has proved to be an astute observation.
