Does anybody seem to care that this decade is just about over?
It just seems to me that I remember more hype at the end of the 80's, the end of the 90's (and all the Y2K nonsense). Now it seems that end of the decade hype is non-existent.

I guess don't blame people. It has been a truly shitty decade, and that includes popular culture too.

1. What should we call it? The end of the zero's?
The end of the aught-years?

The end of the nothing decade?

3. Honestly, aside from the general suckitude of many world events over the past decade
I really think, as others here have noted as well-- a major factor is the simple matter of everyone being pretty fuckin' unable to come up with a shorthand term for the thing, in the first place.

Is it the "zeros"? That just sounds bad. The "aughts"? Nobody says "aught", anymore.

Language defines our reality. People don't know what to call something, they stop talking about it. It's not just the end of the decade, it's been all along; folks haven't been speaking in terms of this decade AS a decade.. not nearly as much.

I'm sure once enough hindsight has a hold of the fucker, some name will catch on. But for now, if you can't name it, it aint there.

4. Hadn't really thought about it 'til just now
I guess we are all just still weary from the end of a millennium. The end of a decade seems trivial.

5. The best thing about the Odds was Tina Fey and the day Barack Obama was elected. Otherwise,
it's sucked real bad.

6. Almost over? It has over two years to go. That's >20% left.
20% is a lot. Just ask the GOP.

8. You realize that a decade is 10 years
So, unless it is 2007 or you started this decade in 2002, there is only about 7 weeks left til 2010. Decades like the 80's include all the 80 years, i.e. 80-89. When we reach 2010 the 0 years will be over; i.e. 00-09.

13. Unfortunately, you're both incorrect.

The first day of the new decade is January 1, 2011- there was no year "0," therefore decades begin with year "1." The last year of a decade is the one that ends in zero.

January 1, 2011 is approximately 1 year + 7 and 1/2 weeks away.

16. You are absolutetly correct.
Most people don't want to accept that decades aren't neat and tidy.

9. A decade without an identity
for a species without an identity, in a civilization without an identity, on a world without an identity.

Just as a small example, take the way we're communicating at the moment. Fast. Easy. Placeless. Without context. Abstract.

10. I remember back when the new decade began
there were lots of pundit types opining on what to call the new decade. It seems no one could come up with anything very catchy and now we are stuck with this nearly over (and relatively sucky) decade with no name. This decade might as well be the red headed stepchild of decades as nobody seems to want to claim it or name it. Hey, there's an idea for a contest. Name the shitty decade that's almost over and win some old Seinfeld CD's or something.
