Should Medicaid Pay for Viagra? By Arthur Arrons Published: 8/3/2009
Erectile Dysfunction medications are not getting cheaper, lets look more into Medicaid and if they should pay for the popular Impotence medication Viagra
Viagra is the first erectile dysfunction pill approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration.
Viagra has become part and parcel of the lives of people with erectile dysfunction that there is even a Federal policy requiring the Medicaid programs to finance the medication of those who have valid prescriptions for Viagra. The policy, which was approved during the incumbency of former President, created a stir among governors who insisted that Medicaid coverage for Viagra users should be an option for the state and not dictated by the Federal government.
The States of Wisconsin and New York signaled the protest versus Viagra by declaring that they will defy the Federal policy. Governors, who claimed they were not consulted about this matter, said that over 40% of the costs for Medicaid are paid for by the states. Medicaid coverage for Viagra is expected to reach $100 million annually.
The Federal health Care Financing Administration however insisted that the states’ Medicaid programs should include Viagra in their coverage when it has been prescribed by the doctors to treat patients with erectile dysfunction problems. Pfizer, the company behind the drug, has requested Medicaid coverage for Viagra in all states.
The New York State Health Department has taken a different tactic saying it opposes the Medicaid coverage of Viagra patients because it is concerned about the possible effects of Viagra on the patients especially those who have chronic conditions.
Viagra is generally safe but the label itself warns that it should not be used by patients who are using nitrates, a substance present in medications for those with heart problems.
The Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services has declared it will not provide coverage for Viagra because it is not medically necessary.
Medicaid coverage for Viagra can however be halted if it is shown that it is being abused financially and clinically.
In the meantime, residents of States that refuse to provide coverage for Viagra would be forced to buy Viagra for $8 to $10 for every pill they need in the process of treating erectile dysfunction.
