Anyone else feel like they're being worked like a sled dog?
Edited on Mon Nov-09-09 07:32 PM by marmar
In these days of crushing unemployment, I'm truly thankful to have a job, but this is getting crazy. My department at work, 2 employees strong, is doing the work of about 10-12 people. It's been about 3 straight weeks of 10-12 hour workdays. And the stress on people in the other departments is rather apparent.
Is anybody shocked that worker productivity is so high? There's no one else left to do any work.

Cube rats of the world unite!!! Workers of the World Unite!!!

One day they're going to push us too far and :nuke:

1. don't get me started
Edited on Mon Nov-09-09 07:25 PM by Skittles
sample: time change night - 14 hours straight, no breaks, no lunch and even to go to the bathroom I have to shout to coworkers to listen for my phone and put 'em on hold - and I had to take a sizable pay cut

31. I'm referring back to actual "Sled Dogs" all but the lead dog runs 6" from a dog butthole.
And if they fed you cabbage and beans for breakfast it will be a particularly bad day.

6. I just got laid off from one job
Edited on Mon Nov-09-09 07:29 PM by lunatica
Only to be lucky because I got rehired to do the exact same job only with less people in another department for a lot more work. Yeah. Same pay. But a bunch who got laid off with me are going to be unemployed. Lucky us.

The enraging thing is that all the staff are still needed but a good third are let go.

18. No shit!
For what I'm doing, I get a decent dog house, a new bowl, a chance to pull to my heart's content, and a promise of reward. But the reward doesn't come. I'm still going night and day, but the run/rest ratio is grim, and they keep promising me a reward. I get about half the food that other dogs do. Snacks on the trail? Forget it! This has gone on for years now!

12. Tell me about it ...
My employer's attitude seems to be pretty clear: If you don't like it leave, there are 100 people that would gladly have your job. Here in metro Detroit that is true .... so what does one do?

15. Yup - it always happens in a depression
A couple of years ago when the economy started to tank someone on DU said - well at least it's not a depression where no one has a job. The thing is, even at the depth of the depression the majority of people had a job. The problem was that the other 30/40 percent did not have a job and would take any job at any pay rate. This had two repercussions: 1. the average pay declined (sound familiar?) and 2. every worker with a job was worked "like a sled dog" least they join the ranks of the jobless, happy that they had work.

This will continue until organized labor feels that it's time to organize again, with mass picket lines to keep out scabs and the will to sit in until they win. While we all are thankful that people can get unemployment payments and other assistance, we should remember that these crumbs are doled out to keep folks hanging on by their fingernails and off the picket lines.
