Senior Democrat is 'confident' that Stupak amendment will be stripped
By Michael O'Brien - 11/09/09 11:50 AM ET

A House Democratic leader said Monday she's “confident” controversial language on abortion will be stripped from a final healthcare bill.

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), the Democrats’ chief deputy whip in the House, said that she and other pro-abortion rights lawmakers would work to strip the amendment included in the House health bill that bars federal funding from subsidizing abortions.

“I am confident that when it comes back from the conference committee that that language won't be there,” Wasserman Schultz said during an appearance on MSNBC. “And I think we're all going to be working very hard, particularly the pro-choice members, to make sure that's the case.”

2. LOL, I'll believe it when I see it
They'll also put in a strong public option while taking out the mandated monopoly for the insurance industry:eyes:

Sorry, but the Senate side is even more conservative than the House, and judging by the past, Senate Dems and Obama are willing to bend over backwards and kiss 'Pug ass all so they can say they got some sort of bipartisan "victory".

3. Thanks -- she does not mess around.
Obama is also signalling that Stupak language has to go.

12. Obama and Pelosi Need to Lean on the Dems That Voted for This
by saying "ok, you made your point but seriously fellas".

The pressure to vote for passage once the bill has made it out of conference committee is going to be intense...

6. I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens, won't we. I'm at least
a bit reassured this motivated woman is working on it.

7. So is Rep. Betsy Markey, D-CO. She voted against the bill, in large part because of this.
From what I understand, she has been circulating a letter or petition or something about this, and has 30 signatories...mostly women Reps.

9. I've only heard bits, but I'm very proud this woman is from Colorado.
AND, she's new on the job!

Here is her statement on her vote:

http://betsymarkey.house.gov/News/DocumentSingle.aspx?DocumentID=154179

Washington, Nov 7 - Following the vote on H.R. 3962 in the U.S. House of Representatives, Congresswoman Betsy Markey released the following statement:

After carefully reviewing this legislation and hearing from thousands of Coloradans across my district, I could not support this bill. This was not an easy decision to make, because I know only too well that America’s health care system is in dire need of reform.

This bill provides new coverage for millions of Americans, but it simply does not do enough to cut the health care costs that are crushing our businesses and families. It’s critical that we control rising health care costs, increase quality and value within our health care system, and improve access to health care and affordable health insurance coverage.

This was not a vote on the idea of health care reform, it was a vote on one specific bill. I remain optimistic that with the House and Senate working together with the Administration, we can achieve a bill that meets the goals of affordability and coverage, improved access, and is also fiscally sustainable in the long-term.

She is also doing a lot of work on credit card rate hikes!

Yes, I dare say she is ROARING!

13. I hope she is right.
If she is wrong, I hope there is another option to get rid of it, some kind of second chance to attack this.

But it would be very nice if the party managers could strip this out, and cared enough to do so.
