Ensuring that insurers don’t reject any American for health coverage because of a pre-existing condition is a top priority of the public. Republicans have repeatedly said that they also want to make this change, but in the alternative legislation they released, Americans with pre-existing conditions would still be left out to dry.

Today on CNN, FreedomWorks head Dick Armey defended the industry’s discriminatory practices by saying that if you have diabetes because you “eat like a pig,” you don’t deserve coverage:

ARMEY: But now, they come along and they say, irrespective of the fact they’ve gone 20, 30, 40 years of their adult life without ever having bought insurance prior to getting a liver inflammation due to their excessive drinking habits or diabetes because they eat like a pig, you must now insure them.

But at what point do we allow the government to order people that you must sell your product to this person or that person, irrespective of any good judgment? We saw what happened in housing when they ordered banks to make loans to people who weren’t qualified. Are we now going to have the same destructive influences in health care because we’re going to order doctors to provide services and so forth?

I had heard for years and years that it is the person with diabetes tendencies own eating habits to blame.

Well, the thing is, if you have the genes for diabetes, you have an in-built compulsion for sweets. If you set out a smorgasbord of sweets and left us alone, I'd nibble and he'd binge on those sweets.

The disease creates the compulsion.

I have a pre-dispositon for kidney disorders. Set up a smorgasbord of salty things like potato chips, and I lose control. He would not lose control.

Occassionally when we both are of strong mind and body, we do a "raw foods" diet and he doesn't even need insulin for that week.

But I really think the whole notion of "Your behavior causes your disease" should be re-examined. Your predispositon to a disease sets up your activites and food habits.

that could be dealt with long before the liver transplant was needed, or the diabetes was developed. This actually illustrates our problem with health issues wonderfully - now people wind up waiting until it's an acute condition, rather than getting help when it's a potential future problem. Good health policy would get way out in front on such issues.

30. Dick Armey loves HIS government-run, tax-supported health care

Yes, he has it, and has had it for almost all of his adult life. First he had tax-supplemented insurance through the state university where he worked, then he had the tax-supplemented Federal system, "the Cadillac of coverage" ... he liked it so much that he didn't want to switch to Medicare. That is why he is suing to divide Medicare from Social Security, so he can collect SS, but keep his Federal coverage.

To quote Bill Moyers, "Dick Armey is the epitome of those people with power and privilege who are insured against the vicissitudes of life, and want no government assistance for any suffering ... Except their own."
