the three young people involved are typical spoiled middle class college kids, without a thought for anyone other than themselves.

The Bryan Able character is, according to my research, a "law enforcement" student. Wonderful!

I suggest locking him in a very small place with a couple hundred cats, then leaving him there for a few days. If he survives, then jail him for 20 years. Instead, he'll get probation for animal cruelty charges and will be out there being the amoral cretin that he is.

As for the other boy and the girl who was your daughter's roommate, they turned on Able as soon as they were caught. But they're far from innocent, themselves. Your daughter is well rid of that one.
