Colombia bases will protect region from "anti-U.S governments"
Edited on Mon Nov-09-09 03:07 PM by Enrique
how considerate of us! We don't stop at protecting the U.S. from anti-U.S. governments (and we know who that means), we also go way out of our way to protect a whole other continent from our enemies.

From an Air Force document submitted to Congress:

Location (CSL) at Palanquero best supports the COCOM's Theater Posture Strategy and
demonstrates our commitment to this relationship. Development of this CSL provides
a unique opportunity for full spectrum operations in a critical sub region of our
hemisphere where security and stability is under constant threat from narcotics
funded terrorist insurgencies, anti-US governments, endemic poverty and recurring
natural disasters.

Other interesting passages:

A fully functional airfield and ramp is essential for supporting the
U.S. mission in Columbia and throughout the United States Southern Command
(USSOUTHCOM) Area of Responsibility (AOR).

(...)

The strong security cooperation relationship also offers an
opportunity for conducting full spectrum operations throughout South America to
include mitigating the Counternarcotics capability.

1. The seven Columbia bases give a new jumping off points for CIA ops in the region.
We'll also be better able to evaluate how SOA / WHINSEC graduates are doing. :sarcasm:

3. What on earth could cause us to think there's threat in Latin America?

The missile crisis ended before I was born. This take over the world thing is really bothersome to me. Do we need a military base within striking distance of every nation on earth to protect us from our fellow man? Do they hate us that much? If so, why?
