Medicare holders, check in here
I'm 33, disabled and I have Medicare through my Social Security Disability. I work part-time.

My deafness is a confirmed disability, and I got my SS right away in 2002.

My wife was accepted into Social Security in September, and will get her medicare in 2 years (she's 31). She is currently on the 9 month trial period which will end in June, and will go part-time if her job will allow her. She works as a contractor for the Air Force. Her FMLA was recently used due to my son, but is forced to pay back her insurance at a rate of $200 per paycheck. She gets little in her paycheck. That will end in May. She pays her share of about $266 per paycheck (at a rate of $600/month) for her own insurance.

If my son was deaf, he would be under Medicare immediately under me. Unfortunately, he's hearing, so he's got his own insurance. $89/month - he was not qualified for SCHIP although we could try again soon. We pay $89/month for his insurance.

1. Checking in, my dear Hawkeye-X!
I got my Medicare at the usual age, 65, last year.

I'm glad you were able to get it right away, and I'm also sad that you needed it.

But that's what it's there for!

2. I got my SS at 60 under my dead husbands name.
When I was to turn 70, social security sent me a letter telling me to register under my own name, because I would get a higher amount. This is because I filed at 70. So before I turned 70 I went to the office and filed the papers. Then when the first check came I didn't get what they told me I would. But I got a check along with that for a bonus, because they said I should have received it in the spring.

I called and asked the person at SS what was up. The male at the other end told me that since I had signed up in May and did not receive benefits tail November I was supposed to receive that as a catch up. I asked him to pull up my record. Asked him where it said my birthday was in May and why they said I signed up then. I told him I did not. I did not turn 70 tail November and why would I change over to my name in May and miss out on getting a larger check when I turned 70. You know what he told me.."well you old people do things like that and forget what you are doing"...I was so mad I slammed up the phone. But I should have gotten the name and had him reprimanded. Called Steno Hoy er's office the next day explained how the SS clerk at the local office screwed up. Sent copies of my birth certificate, the forms dated when I signed up. Before the month was out I got the promised raise and the next check was straightened.

See how when you go to a person face to face, how things can get screwed to heck and back.
