In the year 2020. Living the dream in El Norte. A peek into the future.
At first there were only a few of them looking for a better life. The country had shut their borders and only some were allowed in legally because of quota restrictions. But they found out they could jump ship when their cruise reached a foreign port, blending into the population, never to return to the ship again. Then some hikers found a road and trails across the mountains that led right over the border with nary fence or border patrol customs office in sight. Some of them found their way across the great bodies of water between the country they were leaving and the one they wanted to go to. They jumped ship or sky-dived out of airplanes when it came close to a deserted shore, which they swam to. They became known as wetbacks.

The years passed and more and more were crossing the border illegally, putting down roots, marrying locals for a legal immigration card and using their health care. A cry went up among the locals to stop the illegal aliens, especially from stealing their health care. Yes, the surge of uninsured from south of the border into the country in search of decent health care had created a crisis. The government went into extra sessions to figure out how to deal with the problem.

The illegals, rounded up into detention camps awaited their destiny. Their country didn’t want them back. They couldn’t afford to buy the mandated health insurance required by law. The Republican government in Washington didn’t want a bunch of expatriate Americans filling up their emergency rooms and growing old enough to get on Social Security and Medicare. Alas, there was nowhere else to go. Canada was forced to grant amnesty, but it didn’t stop the trickle of illegal Yanks coming to El Norte Canada for better health care. Everyone knew there was a solution but no one was willing to make the United States of America give them national health care they needed so that they would stay home. The end.

Please take this as a little levity to break up the heat in DU this weekend. I'm really not serious.
