11. Unfortunately, that's true. Fortunately, there are MANY more than them who don't.
And it's made me feel good to see so many DUers argue against that ridiculous idea so much more clearly and logically that I ever could, because I get consumed with anger when I hear or read someone saying something as moronic as "Well, all the students should have guns too."

Oh, I forgot...people who are threatened by an insane murderer aren't allowed to defend themselves. The government will protect them. Except when it doesn't.

27. That's not why it's offensive.
It's because it's an obvious and crass exploitation of fear, not to mention fundamentally dishonest, since it is doubtful that students merely being armed would have prevented it.

If this kid had had access to only a knife, not easily available guns, the body count (if any) would have been much, much lower.

(It's also highly likely that the whole student body being armed would lead to a lot MORE shooting incidents on an annual basis.)

31. Well, "if" and "highly likely" don't meet any sort of logical standard.
If you are ever threatened by a psychopathic killer with a gun, I hope you have one too. It might not be the ideal response but it beats the shit out of sitting there waiting your turn for execution. Or maybe you're a fatalist....

32. Handguns are strictly controlled in the country where I live and crime is very low...
Edited on Thu Apr-19-07 01:05 AM by Matsubara
...so that's highly unlikely.

And the cartoon is also based on a HUGE "if" - If the victims had had guns they might have been able to use them in time.

34. That is true. I have been to Japan many times.
I have a lot of dear friends there. Even in Hiroshima, which might seem odd to some people. But I do wonder if you refuse to believe the situation COULD have been mitigated if there had been one or more trained and armed people in the crime scene. I was not there so I don't know precisely how the killer operated but I do know this much: he had to at least look around at different people if he was preparing to shoot them. I carry a small but effective .38 caliber revolver that I can pull out and aim in 2 seconds. If I had been in that room, I would have at least TRIED to nail the guy. Maybe I would have failed, nobody can look back in time to see but don't you think an attempt to minimize the slaughter would be worth a try?

36. Let's assume you are properly trained in gun safety and a good shot.
Edited on Thu Apr-19-07 01:12 AM by Matsubara
Then let's assume you were there, and your adrenaline didn't get the best of you and you actually took out the kid before he got you, then great.

But for every trained responsible gun owner there are five who don't know what they are doing and who would screw it up royally.

On the other hand, if hadnguns had been strictly controlled for the last few decades, by this point even black market ones would be hard to come by and chances are the kid would have been forced to use something less lethal and more easily stopped.

I think that in the case of this particular shoooting, the relative merits of our scenarios are a draw, but the other benefits of a gun-free society far outweigh the drawbacks. Most gun crimes are committed by a person who knew the victim - a jealous husband shooting his wife in a drunken rage, or a young gang-member wannabe killing a classmate over some perceived disrespect. The easy availability of handguns allows these crimes - which the culprits often soon regret - to happen more often. But I'm sure you're aware of the stats and that gun owners are more likely to be shot with their own guns than one belonging to a stranger...
