When Abortion Was Illegal: A Graphic Look at the Past
I'm bringing this over from DailyKos for the younger ones who don't know why all the fuss about the Stupak amendment.

It's something we older ones never want to go back to whether we were actually involved in the procedures or not.

2. I will kick this because I remember.
Women who were scarred for life after botched abortions because they did not want to have a child in a climate that did not tolerate out of wedlock children at all.

Thanks for posting.

8. I remember too.
I will always fight to prevent going back to those dark days and the horrors women faced.

3. Thanks for posting this.
Women who can make a phone call and make an appointment for a safe and legal abortion now have no idea what we were facing then.

14. That post took tremendous courage. I never in my life would have
believed that we'd have to revisit this painful, painful ground again.

As my 60th birthday approaches I fear for the young women coming up. This was such a hard fought battle, and they have so little experience in dealing with the consequences of illegal abortions.

It is up to those of us who remember to tell the girls around us how important it is NOT to let the darkness envelope us again.

16. I was thinking of Control-Z and this post when I saw
the Stupak amendment get added to the bill. I'm glad you found it.

It is horrifying to think this is not over for good.

11. I wonder if reading it will actually do any good.
It so often seems that the next generation has to actually experience things to get it.

I fear that not enough of the younger women understand how horrible things were.

13. I'm afraid you're right.
Hearing about something and living through it are two entirely different things, for most people. I'm afraid it requires the very intelligent, and enlightened, to truly grasp the realities of the past.

7. Every single attack on choice and all the chipping away means
condemning women to death.

Let's not pretend it can't happen again.

9. Yes, this is why I think the choice meme is a mistake

It should be clearly communicated that it is life or death for women.

Anyway, I think the outcry and pressure on this now, from women sick of being used will be a very good thing. Thanks to the passage with the Stupidass amendment, this issue, critical to the lives of 51% of the population, should get the attention and energy it deserves. And the fundy woman haters can have another bucketful of horseshit for their horseshit party.

10. What angers me the most is that we shouldn't even have to justify our medical decisions.
Abortion is a medical procedure and should be treated as such. Nothing less. Nothing more.

It should be an integral part of any health care plan that promotes the well being of women.

We shouldn't have to jump through hoops for anyone to get the medical treatment we need.

Whether it is private insurance or a government run insurance, women shouldn't have to defend themselves to others over a medical procedure.

Now, I'm a universal health care kind of person and feel we should just be able to use taxes to pay the premiums and just get the care we need without every John, Paul & Stupak rooting around our wombs.

Because it is a life and death matter.

Because it is a life and death matter to force women into desperation - and the anti-woman crowd wants to make women desperate by limiting their medical choices, by limiting access and availability, so women will be forced to do what they want them to do.

And we already know where that leads....to back alley.

17. Thanks for saying
a whole lot of what I couldn't seem to say myself. I think I'm just too angry, frustrated, emotional, and frightened by what I see evolving.

I had some real hope for slow but positive change. It is a bit shocking to see it playing out the way it is. I knew there would always be opposition, but...sigh
