I'm not happy with the Stupak amendment, but you do realize that some of the Congressmen. . .
. . .that you are willing to denounce and throw under a bus on this issue may very well be the champion of or the deciding votes on other pieces of legislation that you want to see.

I am not excusing the vote and I wouldn't mind seeing some of these Congressmen getting a primary, HOWEVER without the support of a few of them we might not have gotten a health care reform bill passed and going forward some of these folks may make the difference on immigration reform, minimum wage, Don't ask Don't Tell, the repeal of DOMA, etc.

7. And I love how people here are okay with it.
Probably the same people who are willing to "compromise" on gay marriage. :puke:

3. I'm highly skeptical
that anyone so eager to throw women's rights under the bus will be standing up to support gay rights.

Or, probably, the rights of immigrants.

They're more likely to continue voting like the Republicans they are.

5. People who vote down feminist issues
usually don't do well on gay rights as far as I know.

6. As they saving their support for women's and gay rights for an election or something?
I only ask because now would be a very good time to cowboy up and do the right thing for Americans who are every bit as deserving of respect as the so-called "base" of (apparently) straight, white men.

Many of us have long memories and it's always the right time to do the right thing.

8. Insurance won't pay doesn't mean no abortions.
Most clinics offer payment plans. First term abortions cost between $300 and $600 so people will just have to come up with it.
Medicaid pays for abortions, so I don't see it as a huge hardship for a large number of people.

10. Spoken as someone to whom those amounts of money are neligable. I couldn't come up with that money
Edited on Sun Nov-08-09 01:27 PM by saracat
now. If people just have to "come up with it" why don't people jusyt have to "come up with it for all other health conditions" ? Why bother with HCR reform at all? And why should women be subject to a mandate for insurance that doesn't cover them 100% ? I guess pregnancy will be treated as the single pre-exisitng condition that isn't covered if you want to terminate it.

13. Medicaid doesn't pay for abortions in most of the country.
CA and I think one other state provide them.

At any rate, this amendment strips abortion coverage from women who previously had it under their insurance plans, and offered women the option of an insulting "abortion rider". I doesn't matter whether or not you think it will cause a hardship. It's a slap in women's faces.

11. Antiabortion laws kill women
and that's the bottom line.

Nothing else you mentioned is as immediately fatal to half the population.

18. Anti-choice pols are rarely pro-gay
So, no, I'm really not thinking a politician hostile to a woman's reproductive health is all about the LGBT community. I'm not sure I have ever, anywhere seen that to be the case. I'd like to see these magical congressional districts that are anti-choice but super gay friendly.

A politician who is conservative about the freedom of women is typically conservative about the freedom of everyone.
