Lieberman wants probe into 'terrorist attack' by major on Fort Hood
By Bridget Johnson - 11/08/09 09:38 AM ET

Homeland Security Chairman Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) said Sunday that he intends to launch a congressional investigation into the motives behind "the worst terrorist attack since 9/11" -- the slaying of 13 people at Fort Hood by an Army major who, Lieberman said, reportedly showed signs of being a "self-radicalized, homegrown terrorist."

Reports of Major Nidal Malik Hasan have included statements justifying suicide bombings and shouting "Allahu Akbar!" ("God is great!") at the scene as he went on Thursday's shooting spree, Lieberman noted.

"It's premature to reach conclusions about what motivated him," Lieberman said on "Fox News Sunday," but added that indications range from the major being under personal stress over an impending deployment to various reports that "he had turned to Islamist extremism."

"If that is true, then this was a terrorist act," Lieberman said.

"This is not the first attempt by Islamist extremists to go after U.S. military bases," the senator added, noting foiled plots to attack Fort Dix and Quantico and the shooting death of an Army recruiter in Little Rock, Ark., by a Muslim convert this summer.

There are indications that Hasan supported that act, Lieberman said.

The Homeland Security chairman also urged the Department of Defense to launch an independent investigation "to see if warning signs were missed."

The military, said Lieberman, needs to have "zero tolerance" for those expressing extremist views. "He should have been gone," the senator said.

1. Would Lieberman call it a terrorist attack if his name was Jones?

10. From what I've read in the news, the feds were looking at him
because of some views supporting suicide bombers. Some other things reported, if confirmed, would make this more than just some guy that 'couldn't take it anymore' 'going postal'.

11. If true, why wasn't he being monitored, or evaluated? The feds
got some explaining to do.

15. "At least six months ago, Hasan came to the attention of law enforcement officials
because of Internet postings about suicide bombings and other threats, including posts that equated suicide bombers to soldiers who throw themselves on a grenade to save the lives of their comrades.

Investigators had not determined for certain whether Hasan was the author of the posting, and a formal investigation had not been opened before the shooting, said law enforcement officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the case."

A former classmate has said Hasan was a "vociferous opponent of the war" and "viewed the war against terror" as a "war against Islam." Dr. Val Finnell, who attended a master's in public health program in 2007-2008 at Uniformed Services University with Hasan, said he told classmates he was
"a Muslim first and an American second."

"In retrospect, I'm not surprised he did it," Finnell said. "I had real questions about what his priorities were, what his beliefs were."

"The system is not doing what it's supposed to do," said Dr. Val Finnell, who complained to administrators at a military university about what he considered Hasan's "anti-American" rants. "He at least should have been confronted about these beliefs, told to cease and desist, and to shape up or ship out."

How do you approach this topic without being accused of simply being anti-muslim? Even in the face of all of this, his apologists are flinging the 'anti-muslim' poo.

The only sentence in Holy Joe's statement with which I agree:
'The military, said Lieberman, needs to have "zero tolerance" for those expressing extremist views.'

However, it hasn't been proven that Maj. Hasan expressed extremist views. I approve of applying the standard of 'extremist views' to overt racists, neo-Nazis & other RW scum that have been allowed into the military after WhistleAss got (s)elected the first time.

7. I'd call all major shoot-em-ups and bombings "terrorist attacks".
Terror used to be the tactic of a variety of groups with all sorts of bees in their bonnets, now it's been narrowed to mean "Islamic" by definition, thanks to idiots like Lieberworm.

9. Let's see
Torture is an extremist view/act - supported by and conducted by people that can rightly be called extremists/terrorists

I searched for the article "Lieberman wants probe into 'terrorist attack' by Scott Roeder in Kansas" and can't find it. I can't imagine why.

He says,"It's premature to reach conclusions about what motivated him," - but wants to investigate the motives behind "the worst terrorist attack since 9/11" (which, btw, suggest Lieberman has already reached a conclusion)

12. ummmm I think the feds are doing that now. I'm sure the minute they knew
this went down they started investigating to see if it was a terrorist attack and are still doing so.

and take back the government, or is that different since they are also calling for terrorist acts. Can we get a probe into Bachman?
