Is the center happy now? And can it hold?
So we passed a health care reform bill that seems to have pissed off the right and disenchanted (at best) the left.

Will the achievement of the so-called moderates be enough to retain the congress?

I doubt it.

I really think we would have been better pulling to the left this time. The moderates would have come around, especially when the started reaping the benefits. Then we would have had a motivated left-center coalition.

With the left disenchanted and the right pissed and the middle unable to reap any real benefits to the change until after the mid-terms, I predict we will see a new Gingrich-like "Contract With America" in 2010.

We should have done better. This was an opportunity to pull moderates to the left, where their values truly are, and we missed it.

(I realize this bill will benefit some people, but I think it comes up short in many ways)

1. Primary lesson learned (I hope)---
There's no point in conceding anything at all to the opposition. They'll vote against it anyway. So screw bipartisanship. Compromise only weakened the bill. But the Senate bill and subsequent processes await.

3. Perhaps the vote in the house will wake-up the Senate that bipartisanship can be irrelevant.
Let's hope.

2. The "center" in Washington is far, far to the right of the center
among Americans. Unless you define Americans as angry old white guys.
