In just the very recent past, there are plenty of people right here on DU - which supposedly .....
..... is representative of the Democratic base - the overt discrimination against gay people, and now women, has been openly tolerated in the warm fuzzy blanket of support that borders on blind loyalty. From under that same blanket, more war has been defended as has a watered down version of a watered down position on healthcare.

1. Wow - this post had +1 rec when I first accessed it...
Edited on Sun Nov-08-09 09:51 AM by Dennis Donovan
...and a mere 20 seconds later, I went to rec it and it came up "0 rec"...
The "unrec" feature is being abused by the RW lurkers...

14. Actually I unrecced it because it's so poorly written.
For something to make the Greatest Page, I think it should have at least one full, comprehensible sentence in it.

Call me silly.

2. Yep.
I knew it was coming. When the gays get shoved out of the tent, I always know they are coming for the women (which also includes gay women) next. That was a real canary in a coalmine moment.

3. there really seems to be a deep insecurity with some administration defenders here
. . . and a shortsightedness to their politics.

I don't mind folks taking different positions. I just don't like to be told to settle for less than we deserve to satisfy some short-term political compromise, like splitting the difference with the escalated occupation and demanding fealty to a terribly compromised political process which has produced such an unnecessarily horrible health insurance bill. This is progressive politics? My ass.

4. A lot of progressive voices were run out of here on a rail
And a lot of not-so-progressive voices filled their void.
It's a perfect representative sample of what has happened in this party.
Right-leaning moderates have taken over and pissed in the pool.

6. Where have they gone?
Surely they're posting someplace.

I find myself throwing shit out just to piss off the "new cadre" that seems to have infested what WAS a great left wing internet site. I'd rather talk rationally (as I once did here) about stuff than always find myself incensed over the last conservative support line.

10. I wish I knew
They might be in a choke-hold under a bus somewhere.
My guess is, like me, they have become very disillusioned with the process and just "opted out".
Until there is a strong party of the people--my days of doing work and support of the THIS party are over.

13. I left when this place started sounding more like FreeRepublic than FreeRepublic during the
primaries. The virulent misogyny which was encouraged here revolted me. I visit very rarely now and have yet to find that things have changed. It used to be a great community.

11. I'm disappointed, but not yet cynical.
I can live with compromise right now--call me a principled pragmatist. Yes I think DOMA should be repealed NOW, yes I think DADT is a piece of shit, yes I hate the Stupak amendment (and hope like hell it'll get stripped out in the reconciliation process), and yes I think in other news that Obama's handling of the banking crisis has been inept and insufficient, and finally yes, I think Afghanistan is the same trap it was when the Soviets tried it in the 80's. But I also recognize that no Democratic president since FDR has had so many major crises on his plate at one time, and none have had to deal with such a varied and crazy basket of shit from day one (thanks, W!). FDR made his share of mistakes: so will Obama--it's inevitable. What I keep in mind is the alternative: if not Obama, with all his flaws, who? McCain/Palin? Would that really have been preferable?
