My response to the fundraising letter I received from President Obama tonight.
Dear Mr. President-

I didn't send money to your campaign last November to get you elected so that you and the more spineless members of the Democratic Party could invite the insurance and pharmaceutical companies to help you draft health care legislation while shutting doctors and nurses out.

Tonight the House is patting itself on the back for making us a shit sandwich, now you want us to donate more money so we can have what, sprinkles on it?

***********************************************************

On Nov 8, 2009, at 1:43 AM, President Barack Obama wrote:

This evening, at 11:15 p.m., the House of Representatives voted to pass their health insurance reform bill. Despite countless attempts over nearly a century, no chamber of Congress has ever before passed comprehensive health reform. This is history.

But you and millions of your fellow Organizing for America supporters didn't just witness history tonight -- you helped make it. Each "yes" vote was a brave stand, backed up by countless hours of knocking on doors, outreach in town halls and town squares, millions of signatures, and hundreds of thousands of calls. You stood up. You spoke up. And you were heard.

So this is a night to celebrate -- but not to rest. Those who voted for reform deserve our thanks, and the next phase of this fight has already begun.

The final Senate bill hasn't even been released yet, but the insurance companies are already pressing hard for a filibuster to bury it. OFA has built a massive neighborhood-by-neighborhood operation to bring people's voices to Congress, and tonight we saw the results. But the coming days will put our efforts to the ultimate test. Winning will require each of us to give everything we can, starting right now.

Please donate $5 or whatever you can afford so we can finish this fight.

Tonight's vote brought every American closer to the secure, affordable care we need. But it was also a watershed moment in how change is made.

Even after last year's election, many insider lobbyists and partisan operatives really thought that the old formula of scare tactics, D.C. back-scratching and special-interest money would still be enough to block any idea they didn't like. Now, they're desperate. Because, tonight, you made it crystal clear: the old rules are changing -- and the people will not be ignored.

In the final phases of last year's election, I often reminded folks, "Don't think for a minute that power concedes without a fight," and it's especially true today. But that's okay -- we're not afraid of a fight. And as you continue to prove, when all of us work together, we have what it takes to win.

Please donate to OFA's campaign to win this fight and ensure that real health reform reaches my desk by the end of this year:

Let's keep making history,

President Barack Obama

1. Thanks for including the link for donating. Because your letter makes me want to donate
Edited on Sun Nov-08-09 03:05 AM by emulatorloo
I am interested in hearing your very negative opinion, but I trust the assessment of Gov Dean. Alan Grayson, Bernie Saunders, Anthony Weiner and other progressives who either endorsed or voted for this bill.

If the insurance and pharmaceutical companies loved it so much, they would not be spending 100s of thousand of dollars every week to defeat it. They hate it and they are scared of the foundation that it provides.

I plan to double what I donated to him last year for 2012.

So go and have your little temper tantrum. I'll see to it that it is made up for.

Not gonna be a chump for the traitors in this party selling us all out anymore, nor a blind cheerleader.

RAW

(And P.S., let us all know how that shit sandwich tastes all moldy and rancid when they serve it up in 2013 after thousands of more Americans have kicked the bucket because they didn't have the guts to push single payer through... oh wait a minute, it will probably be repealed after mid-terms when disgusted voters avoid the polling places and Rethugs regain the majority because the pink-tutu Dems didn't have the intestinal fortitude to do what was right instead of do what would enrich them via their corporate sponsors in insurance and pharmaceuticals)

9. I don't think they had a choice
Despite being some of the only Dems with spines to fight for a better option when they could. In the end, they had to join Pelosi and Reid's circle jerk. I hope to GOD the voters in their districts get rid of the two of them for starters, they're a disgrace to the ideals of the Democratic party.

10. Of course they had a choice. They all said it was a good bill, even though it is not perfect.
Edited on Sun Nov-08-09 03:20 AM by emulatorloo
This bill is going to help many many people.

Pelosi is quite popular in her district, so you are out of luck there.

Republicans hate her.

Insurance Company Lobbying firms run ads with UGLY PICTURES OF HER.

The more they do that, the more I know she is doing something right.

Reid seems ineffectual to me. But he appears to be trying to rise to the occasion.

12. You guys stay mature and don't have any "tantrums".
Keep rocking and rolling with the status quo. Keep up the "sports team mentality" not demanding better of your party or allowing any dissent in light of an incredible betrayal to those who fought hard and gave this administration a mandate to deliver something worthwhile and really history making.

This proves they are mostly all the same at the top tier. And on a separate but related note, it's why no one top tier fought hard for impeachment (cough... Nancy "OFF THE TABLE" Pelosi). Because our side knew they were guilty by association knowing of all the torture memos and it would have come out.

16. People like Alan Grayson, Anthony Weiner, and Howard Dean
understand the long term goal and that victory will be achieved in increments. Getting something done will make passing future like legislation easier.

In addition, defeating HCR because it's not strong enough for you would just lend force to the Republicans and make it difficult for President Obama to get anything meaningful done for the rest of his term.

21. Firstly I sincerely doubt that you donated to Obama's campaign.
This post is a typical example of a Republican ploy to pose as a supporter who has been betrayed. The fact of the matter is President Obama has succeeded in getting the congress to address this serious problem and has accomplished what every president from FDR to Clinton have not been able to do. Is it perfect? Hell no. Is it a giant step in the right direction? You better believe it.

I made TWO donations, one two months before the election, and one on it's eve. How DARE you expect that believing in a candidate and supporting them equals an expected blind allegiance when they betray their constituency.

Fuck you.

25. If Wishes Were Horses...
I've been on several sides of this issue...going many years without insurance or poor policies due to employers who saw this as an "expense" not an investment in a productive and healthy company. I also worked with my father's medical practice and saw the insurance companies play god...telling him who he could treat and what treatments he was "acceptable". We wrote off thousands of dollars each year for many who couldn't afford care rather than turn them over to collections. I also am fortunate that I now live very comfortably and not only can afford to self insure, but have no problems contributing to a public program so everyone can eventually get the basic care and not have to go bankrupt.

This is not a perfect bill nor the final bill...but a big step towards valuing life and health as not a luxuary but a necessity. As someone astutely pointed out last night, Social Security and Medicare also had to be improved and modified over the years to where they are now...so will this bill. Thank goodness for an administration and Congress that are looking toward helping save lives rather than squandering billions in death and destruction.

There's still a lot to be done, but this is a big step in dealing with a major crisis that kills thousands every year and will prevent millions from facing bankruptcy.
