What effect will this Health Care Bill have on elections?
Is there anything in here to encourage liberal women to vote Dem? Nope. Their abortion rights are being further eroded, with the help of NARAL and PP.

How about the young, who adore(d) Obama? When they start going to prison for not paying for Health care they cannot afford, where do you think they will be election day? Home.

Old time liberals like me? These folks ain't worth voting for, working for, or supporting. I for one am gonna write my usual letters to the ed, and castigate these sell outs.

The Democratic Corporate Party is gonna reap the whirlwind for this heap of broken promises to EVERYONE in the base.

GLBT will stay home too, as the DCP has abandoned them.

Change we can spit on.

Thanks for all that leadership, Barack.

1. ZOMG!11! Everyone's fined $250,000 and in prison for 5 years... ...NOT!!! That's WND and Drudge...

8. erm from your link, seems that if you dont buy insurance, you get fined,
the bill does not impose criminal penalties on people merely for failing to purchase health insurance; rather, people who do not buy health insurance and also willfully refuse to pay the tax imposed on them for such actions can face civil or criminal penalties.

what happens when you dont pay a fine to the government????? It even tells you that you can face criminal penalties. So its either you buy coverage or you face a fine of 2.5%.

2. The bill doesn't allow aboriton to be paid for, but abortion is not the only health care issue
that women have.

The compromise sucked, but it is better than the alternative, nothing.

11. Also, it isn't the final bill, it just get the process moving. However, even if it is in the final
bill, doesn't mean that it can't be modified later

To me the important thing is to get something started, then we can build upon it

If we throw it away, we will have nothing

3. the more radical the GOP says the bill is, the BETTER it will look to everyone
So even if it's a limp effort, in trying to appeal to their base, the GOP will convince independents to vote for Democrats.

The only way the GOP could undermine it is if they said it didn't go far enough.

4. I seriously doubt young people are going to prison - sounds like Republican scare stuff
To me the stupak SP? amendment doesn't sound legal -- so I bet it will be thrown out. Abortion is legal, how can they restrict insurance companies from paying for them? KOOKOO< will not fly.

I just don't think the picture is as gloomy as you paint it.

17. See Media matters to debunk this.
Drudge, WND distort health care bill to fearmonger about cost of insurance, possibility of jail time
Matt Drudge and WorldNetDaily.com both falsely asserted that, in Drudge's words, the House health care reform bill states that people must "buy a $15,000 policy or go to jail." In fact, as stated by the Joint Committee on Taxation letter on which Drudge's and WND's claims are based, the bill does not impose criminal penalties on people merely for failing to purchase health insurance; rather, people who do not buy health insurance and also willfully refuse to pay the tax imposed on them for such actions can face civil or criminal penalties.

Who ever heard of people going to jail for not paying taxes, well except for Al Capone.

19. lol your missing the point, the tax is just so because they didnt get coverage
its easy to say its just the same as other taxes, but people are not going to see it that way they will see it as a punishment for not buying health insurance. Ive got no idea why people are nuancing this as if its not a penalty of some sort, and if you dont pay the extra 2.5% then you are going to get fined more and face criminal charges...

23. Taxes are part of our civic duty.
We pay taxes for many reasons. This is a legitimate means of solving a problem that costs billions and contributes to the death of 40,000 people a year. There is not difference between this tax and one to pay for welfare, the wages of civil servants, or a stealth bomber that kills a family of 12 in Afghanistan.

7. Well if you have a pre-existing condition and no insurance, and this form of the bill takes law,
Edited on Sun Nov-08-09 01:06 AM by still_one
I have no doubt you will vote Democratic

If you have a loved one who who was dropped their healthcare provider, and have gotten deeply in debt, they will vote Democratic

If you lost your job, and your insurance along with it, they will vote Democratic

You talk about the Democratic "base". What does that mean?

Liberal, Moderate, Progressive, pro-choice, anti-choice, etc.

One thing I know, elections today are won by the party who attracts the most independents. Those that get the independent vote win elections

If this bill helps independents/moderates, then the Democrats win. If not, who knows?

a pre-existing condition get denied coverage. If you have had any experience with the status quo, you can see a lot of value in this bill even with its imperfections.

13. I don't know if you were listening to some of the CSPAN callers, but it became obvious
who was for it, and who was against it.

Most of those who were older, had pre-existing conditions, or knew someone without insurance were for it

Those who were young, and healthy, were against it for the most part

Many people don't realize that they are a heartbeat away from a medical disaster and financial ruin until it is too late

21. NARAL???? WTF you smokin' dude/ette?
Read their stance here, at their web site:

http://www.prochoiceamerica.org/issues/abortion/access-to-abortion/health-care-reform.html

Quote:

Breaking News! House adopts anti-choice Stupak-Pitts amendment to health-care reform bill.

What's Happening

As members of Congress negotiate health-care reform legislation, some anti-choice lawmakers and their allies are entangling the bill in anti-abortion politics and spreading lies they hope will derail the entire health-reform effort.

These opponents of choice are demanding a new nationwide abortion ban in the private health-insurance market.

In the current insurance marketplace, private plans can choose whether to cover abortion care – and most do. If these anti-choice members of Congress succeed, women could lose coverage for abortion care, even if their private health-insurance plan already covers it!

about half the current rate (4 to 1), so their rates will get jacked 50% and they'll have an IRS enforced mandate to puke up the cash they would otherwise be using to save for a home, car, wedding, etc. Something tells me we're going to explode the number of young republicans if this gets crammed through.
