I attended the volunteer orientation for my local humane society today...
I am now qualified to socialize the green dogs. this means that I can take the most adoptable dogs out to the run to pee and poop and I can make kong toys for the dogs and I can just play with the green dogs as much as I want. I am sooooo excited! There is a method to this madness. It gives me a chance to understand how things work at the humane society and the most adoptabel dogs get as little stress as possible. I could not be more excited. I have to do a one on one with a volunteer, but I will do that Tuesday. For those of you who were so kind to me when I lost my 14 year old Chocolate Lab in May, I am doing this for both of us.

5. We all had so much fun!
the volunteers brought in 2 dogs to demonstrate things like how to approach a new dog, and what to do with a jumping dog. They bring in the first dog and the trainer says, "who's this?', and the volunteer says, " I don't know!", and it was really funny because we couldn't get the dog that we were supposed to be approaching to be shy at all, and the dog that was supposed to jump kept rolling on her back to have her belly patted. It's a nice place and I feel so good about taking this step.

6. It there is a heaven
I do believe there is a special place there for people like you.

I've been doing something similar with kitties for 10 years now and it's rewarding and heartbreaking. Rewarding because we save so many, heartbreaking because we can't save them all.

We do the best we can.

I lost 3 dogs to death in three years. Now I love a lot of dogs yet get to go home with no dog responsibilities.

10. AWESOME!
I am sure it will be very rewarding for you and the pups too! I have been volunteering with a local org for almost 4 years now, and sometimes it feels like yesterday when I stepped in the door, excited and ready to help. I worked all day today, came home covered in cat hair, and wouldn't have it any other way :-)
