US: More Foreign Troops Certain in New Afghan Plan
Source: AP

BRUSSELS — A top Pentagon official says President Barack Obama's new strategy for Afghanistan will be certain to include reinforcements of foreign troops from both the United States and allied nations.

Undersecretary of Defense Michele Flournoy said a strategy decision on new deployments involving the U.S. and other troop-contributing nations would be made within the next few weeks, according to an official transcript released Saturday.

Flournoy, the Pentagon's policy chief, led a U.S. delegation that briefed NATO ambassadors Thursday on the Obama administration's review of the Afghan war. Officials released a transcript of her remarks from that meeting.

"No one is talking about leaving Afghanistan, or even standing pat. We are increasing our commitment and we're talking about how best to do that with both civilian and military resources," Flournoy was quoted as telling NATO ambassadors.

3. that's just bullshit
More and more nations are deciding that sacrificing life, limb, and livelihood in Afghanistan isn't worth it for their country-folk. The U.S. is going to quickly find itself in the same isolated position we've found ourselves in in Iraq if we continue to escalate this 'pollyandish misadventure' in Afghanistan.

4. Like Rep. Massa said, escalating Afghanistan now, is as big a
mistake as the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

...

Seriously, it is worrying to observe certain Pentagon elements entering the field of political (and (domestic, yours and NATO and other potentially friendly countries') public relations) discourse in this manner. That is not their job.

Or, are they planning a military coup (in the USA)?

10. with the proportion of the budget which goes to Defense
. . . they are already firmly dictating the amount of attention, care, and money our other important priorities receive. But, I get your point. They are likely feeling the pinch of resources and scrambling to the forefront to claim and secure their promised (purchased) share of the pie.

"Originally Kenyans were not doing security work but today, there are more than 500 of them in Iraq and they work for as little as $400 per month.
"So we are facing competition.

"But all eyes are now on Afghanistan. We hope that as it opens we are going to get more business there," he says.
