"what the fuck was that?" as that bad boy boat screams past.

then the whaling ship capsizes. the end.

Though the tv show hasn't hurt.

Ady Gil deserves the credit for SSCS getting that craft.

10. they would like to do that, but based on the seamanship they have displayed on whale wars...
they would be lucky to get that within sight of a whaling ship.

nice folk. good intentions. not sailors...

11. Surely and hopefully
They'd have an experienced crew commanding that vessel with tactical knowledge of how to run the thing and what it's limits are and not merely a crew of volunteers. THAT would be dumb.

That said, I can't wait to see it in action :applause:

13. the problem is... this slick little racing boat cannot be carried aboard the sea sheppard...
its going to have to depart oz or nz and head out into those challenging waters on its own. it will need to be tended for fuel and supplies, and it wasn't built for this kind of operation off the coast of antarctica. those seas will probably rip this thing to shreds.

no matter who is sailing it...

Human/dolphin comparison.

Until we demonstrate that we can survive fifty million years in our current form we are the inferior species and murdering dolphins and whales should be considered genocide.

30. Not to cheer the whalers...
But international law is pretty explicit on what stunts you can and cannot pull with a vessel on the high seas. The collision regulations are usually well enforced when dealing with commercial vessels, but I doubt any regulatory body wants the hassle of dealing with Watson.

As a professional mariner I can't stand to watch the show. The level of training held by the "officers" is bad enough- Watson evades international safety and training regulations by registering his ship as a "pleasure yacht". The Irwin doesn't have any of the lifesaving gear or equipment needed for arctic waters- minimum for liferaft capacity is 2x the crew and 1 "gumby" immersion suit for every person. Its a miracle Watson hasn't gotten someone killed yet- the accounts I've read say the Irwin is poorly maintained and should have been scrapped years ago.

You can see the lack of safety training on deck- they send RHIBs out without radios or full fuel tanks, and flipped a RHIB while they were deploying it during the first season. Its just a bad show of seamanship.

but i think the whole thing is a TV show, and like all the reality TV they stage stuff for the cameras, but your right when i have seen it the seamanship stinks...

But the sort of fuckups that happen regularly on the Irwin are the kinds of thing that would get a professional mariner fired at the next port. Its just embarrassing for them.

40. But their hearts are in the right place
But I have to wonder if there isn't maybe, just maybe a tiny bit of truth to your sentiment.

I love the ocean and I ADORE whales n dolphins et.al. My boyfriend is a hands on in-the-field-working marine biologist and back in the 80's (long before we met unfortunately) he started the Whale Rescue Unit here in Southern California and he knew Paul way back then too. Well without going into a whole long story let's just say that some personalities and/or egos being larger or perhaps one person just having a more radical side to him compared to the other, suddenly my boyfriend found himself, shall we say, not so included or involved with the foundation any longer and that foundation morphed out of my BF control. Anyway despite this history between my BF and Paul and one of Pauls buddies whose name escapes me at the moment, I told my sweetheart that as far as I'm concerned anyone that rescues whales is a superhero to me. So of course that includes him but also Paul Watson even if Pauls tactics may seem too radical or for naught to many. Every whale life saved is a victory.

What's really cool is we have pictures on our wall taken by Bob Talbot (marine wildlife photographer) of my BF actually on top of this huge Gray Whale cutting nets off of him. Saved him too. Very cool photos. He's my ultra Superhero:loveya:

So yeah I'm doing well tonight thank you... and you? Playing lion tamer tonight:evilgrin:
