Lapsed-Catholic, Believer in God, Oklahoma Bombing suspect...

Tim McVeigh!
=====================================

TIME: Are you religious?

MCVEIGH: I was raised Catholic. I was confirmed Catholic (received the sacrament of confirmation). Through my military years, I sort of lost touch with the religion. I never really picked it up, however I do maintain core beliefs.

TIME: Do you believe in God?

MCVEIGH: I do believe in a God, yes. But that's as far as I want to discuss. If I get too detailed on some things that are personal like that, it gives people an easier way alienate themselves from me and that's all they are looking for now.

Just two examples of how labeling is done and not done depending on the group in question.

2. McVeigh was not a lapsed Catholic
He took Catholic Last Rites right before he was executed.

3. If he didn't go to mass for Communion every week, & give Confessions regularly, he was lapsed.

5. Well how in the hell does that work?
Does that Last Rite deal make up for the time lapsed? Is there some kind of penalty for that? Or did he get to go to heaven with everyone else? Or not?

And how many Communions and Confessions have to be missed before someone is considered lapsed? A few? Hundreds? Whats the figure?

This stuff gets my head spinning?

9. Once a Catholic, always a Catholic.
The fact is, once you're in they never let you go - at least from the Church's perspective. The requirements - in my childhood parish, anyway - was mass once a week (with Communion) and Confession once a month - with more if necessary. If you missed either you would be considered "lapsed" by Fr Magner and not entitled to Communion until you confessed your sins to him. (Sundays after Mass, then every Wednesday & Friday between 10 am and 12 noon and Saturday between 8 am & 10 am.)

And everyone is entitled to Last Rites. But whether or not your sins are absolved & you get to Heaven is up to God.

6. Read this
http://www.cnn.com/COMMUNITY/transcripts/2001/04/04/michelherbeck/

"I asked him, "What if there is a heaven and hell?"

He said that once he crosses over the line from life to death, if there is something on the other side, he will -- and this is using his military jargon -- "adapt, improvise, and overcome." Death to him is all part of the adventure."

Taking last rites only means that he was either hedging his bets or was frightened by his impending death. Or maybe it was sincere, I'm pretty skeptical of that, but it wasn't a continuation of a lifetime of being a Catholic believer.
