Long Island Hate Crime Suspect: "God Made Me Hate Gay People"

There is an update on the Long Island gay-bashing that happened early Sunday morning. Robert Bellamy, the 23-year-old thug arrested by police for the beating and robbing of the two suspected gay men, told police "God made me hate gay people," reports Newsday.

At his arraignment at First District Court in Hempstead Thursday, Judge Robert A. Bruno ordered the Lakeview man jailed on $100,000 bond or $50,000 cash bail. The attack occurred in Lakeview in the early hours of Sunday and police said it was possible the man in drag was dressed in women's clothes for Halloween.

Bellamy told police, "God made me hate gay people," court records show. He was represented in court by Legal Aid Society lawyer Taryn Shechter, who said Bellamy attends a trade school in Wyandanch and lives with his mother.

Bellamy's accomplices are still at large, Nassau Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey, said at a news conference at the department's Mineola headquarters. County Executive Thomas Suozzi, who stood with Mulvey , "If you commit a hate crime in Nassau County, we're going to do everything we can to arrest you, put you in jail and make your life miserable."

Detectives say the vicious attack left the victims with bruises, black eyes, and bloody lips. They were treated and released from a local hospital.

Bellamy was charged with robbery as a hate crime and two counts of assault as a hate crime. Funny how God "told" him "to hate gay people" but not to get a job and move out of mom's house. He'll have plenty of time to think about where he's going.

1. That's practically all He does these days!
I seem to remember when he had a much fuller agenda.

15. I've noticed that many threads on many topics get unrec'd almost instantly.
It's almost as if there is an asshole (or three) who get their rocks
off doing it. I'm definitely on the side of those who think both recs
and unrecs ought to be publicly visible, like signatures on a petition.

FYI. Rec. :(

Actually it's the admins who can see the unrecs, not the mods. Edit.

7. I know and we can complain all we want
but the reality of it is that the systematic homophobia on/of DU that is inherit to the whole way the site operates is only visible to those of us that are of the minority and those that take the time to honestly look at whats going on.

6. The problem here is...
Sure, they can see who unrecs, but there is no explanation as to why.

What can the mods do about it? Track it for a pattern? Who has that kind of time?

I think the unrec feature is unfair to the smaller groups that do not get as many views normally, but just a few unrecs makes it much easier to keep them off the Greatest page. Also, I know several people who have said they hit unrec accidentally. We're asked to confirm our choice in a poll, why not the unrec if we must have it?

8. I think the solution is to have it so you can change your vote

and to have a listing with each post of who has recced it or unrecced it. A little transparency goes a long way in stopping bullies.

10. Well we do see how well that went over in California...
If I unrec a post I would have no reason explaining why.

(I never unrec them, though. It seems counterproductive to me. And kind of mean spirited.)

13. The Admins have TS'd a person for doing this.
So I imagine they can track it if it gets excessive. If it's part of an overall pattern of behavior it should be tracked.

9. God created gay people, and told straight people, "make sure they don't ever have sex"
So I'm not sure that he is entirely wrong, at least insofar as it is consistent with prevailing interpretations of the God of the Old Testament.

12. Maybe god wasn't really telling you to hate gays, but instead she was saying "you're a douche bag"

14. The men who'll rape you daily in prison will hate gay people too. So you'll be among friends
and have lots in common.

16. Is God going to do his jail time?
If not, then he can get bent. ("He" in this case being the criminal, not God.)

Christianism = Tribalism cloaked in Christianity.

Christ wasn't a tribalist.
