Get real people, because that is what we have in store!!!

A public option that is not public nor an option, a mandate to purchase lousy overpriced "coverage" from your local monopoly! The insurance companies are laughing their collective asses off, right now!

2. So then why are the insurance companies still spending big bucks to try to stop it?
Edited on Fri Nov-06-09 03:21 PM by emulatorloo
If it is so rewarding for the industry, why are they still busing teabaggers around and sending their shills out, etc, etc. Clearly they are putting the screws to Joe Liebermann and the others who are in their pocket.

5. They're sending bucks to make sure they get exactly the law they want.
It seems they have succeeded brilliantly.

7. So if they have succeeded, why don't they stop pouring the money in?
Edited on Fri Nov-06-09 03:22 PM by emulatorloo
Surely it could be better spent on an executive jet or gold house slippers for a CEO.

They see that Us Democrats seem willing to settle for any thing. Why would they stop now? (edited 'cause I posted it in the wrong slot.)

10. Because it's not a done deal yet.
Once Obama signs it, it will be a done deal. Then the money will slack off. (just a prediction, of course)

15. I read somewhere that Republicans are planning to run on "Repealing Healthcare" in 2010
Edited on Fri Nov-06-09 03:46 PM by emulatorloo
I wish I could remember where -- but they are going to use that as an argument as to why Republican should take Congress.

OH here we go:

Gingrich: If Health Care Reform Passes, We'll Repeal It

18. So, considering the added "costs" of this bill start immediately..
and any "benefits" are 2-3 years away, how do you suppose that is likely to play out?

16. Ah here's another one: Key Republican: GOP would repeal health bill if they win in 2010 ...
http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/56815-key-republican-gop-would-repeal-health-bill-if-they-win-in-2010

"Republicans will repeal healthcare reform legislation if they win control of Congress because of that bill, a key Republican pledged late Sunday.

The health bill is "dead on arrival" in Congress, said Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas), the ranking member of the House Energy and Commerce committee, said during an interview on Fox News.

"If they somehow manage to get the votes and get enough Democrats to walk the plank and commit suicide, in the next Congress, I'll be chairman Joe Barton of the Energy and Commerce committee, and we'll repeal it," Barton said."

6. Because, unlike those of us who have already folded, they will play their cards until the end.
But look at their stock prices, they know they have the upperhand.

24. Good point
And I still don't get this theme, since the idea is for everyone to be insured.

Insurance companies have to make a profit, to keep operating and to pay claims.

I want to respond to say that you're right, of course, but if I do I'll be checking in, and I don't want to do that because I don't support this lousy legislation.

What to do? What to do?

26. except there not that profitable
compared to the majority of other industries. Last year Wellpoint's pre-tax margins were under 6%, Cigna was 2%, UNH was 6.5%... So after they pay taxes, it's about 3-4%. Gotta wonder what the reaction would be to creating non-profit public options funded initially by taxpayers to compete in industries employing DU members in whatever field they're in, even if there margins were about 5%. That's why CBO reports had suggested the public option would cost more than private insurance, if any insurer simply froze their premiums for a year they would instantly become a money losing operation. And some insurers who haven't correctly priced risk or leaned their operations are losing money as it is.
