Face book users BEWARE!
Edited on Fri Nov-06-09 02:34 PM by nebenaube
I don't have a face book account but just received three separate emails (on different addresses) containing a zip attachment. The email ask people to unzip the attachment and execute the agreement.exe program or have their accounts restricted. Obviously, this is bullshit...

2. Yeah I have been seeing a lot of these in the past week
Obvious scams... what I do is forward them to the ISP where they came from, usually they'll take action, if they don't I ban that domain from my mail server.

3. Given the recently relaxed FB application/privacy rules...

Expect to see a lot more FB-related phishing scams, now with personalized information siphoned from your FB account! Whee!

:banghead:

And it bears repeating: Never, ever, ever open or run a file (especially an executable!) that you receive via email--unless you were expecting a file with exactly that filename from a trusted source.

4. And for the love of pete
make SURE you have "Hide extensions for known file types" in the Folder Options control panel UNCHECKED. Whoever allowed that to even be a setting let alone enabled by default after all these years (it's the default in Windows 7, and they know better!) should be fired from Microsoft.

5. It's STILL the default setting in Win7?
Oh man, MS just never learns on this issue.

8. Yup! It really boggles the mind.
Hiding file extensions by default is industrial-strength stupid. It shouldn't even be possible to do this, there is no reason whatsoever. And on the Windows platform, it can still be deadly, even with UAC (which most users blithely click through anyway. At least in a corporate domain environment users have to call me to come enter administrative credentials if a program is trying to install itself, so I can ensure it's legit. That's a big reason why I'm happily rolling Windows 7 out to every user who is needing their PC replaced or a newer PC that needs to be wiped and reformatted.)

6. Never, EVER open an enclosed attatchment from an unknown source
Edited on Fri Nov-06-09 03:36 PM by LTR
Exceptions would be friends, family, work, etc.

If ever in doubt, just go to the site in question and do whatever needs doing there.

7. Thanks for sharing the information...
I don't open any .exe files unless I know they are coming or I have personally opened them myself. TrogL has taught me well.
