I Feel That We Either Need to Have a Draft or Bring The Troops Home
Edited on Fri Nov-06-09 02:36 PM by EndersDame
I don't in any way condone what happened at Fort Hood . My dad is in the army and has been to Iraq and Afghanistan several times. Year after coming home from Iraq the most recent time, my step mom says she is still very worried about him as he is very withdrawn and insular. He has stopped going out (even going on scenic motorcycle rides) he showers several times a day and does not sleep much. She is worried he is depressed (I know he is ) and that he might try to kill himself.

I personally against both wars and think we need to get the hell out of there ASAP! But if we don't I realize that we may need to draft because these people going over there can only take so much. I think also to be fair the draft should be both genders. We really are in a giant mess in Afghanistan and Iraq. Mr. Obama I hope you are listening.

disclaimer I am draftage but female and totally against the war

On Edit I dont want to come across as advocating the draft . I am for Bring Home The Troops. I think that the pressure is building and a descion will have to be made soon as to a Draft or Bringing The Troops home. We have spread ourselves way too thin in the Middle East, continuing Bush's War

If you think the military needs more people to kill with, then by all means enlist and help them out!

No need for a draft if you really feel that way.

6. I believe I left out words
I dont mean to advocate continuing the war 9in fact quite the opposite) but those are the two choices I see available to alleviate stress on soldiers. War is a Bitch.

8. If the best solution is bringing them home, then lets bring them home
But I can't agree that the second best solution is to send more troops against their will to spread the misery and make the war longer.

9. The "bring back the draft so wars will end" canard fools no one. The all-volunteer armed services is
Edited on Fri Nov-06-09 02:45 PM by timeforpeace
working quite well, they are the most able armed forces ever (lots of practice at real war, unfortunately) and can be the major force for peace if used only as a deterrent. Unfortunately the escalation in Afghanistan negates any good they could be doing, but we have only Obama to blame for that. And we voted for him. So look to other places for your solutions to war, like who we voted for.

10. A Draft would help bring an end to our current state of constant warfare.

While an all volunteer military actively encourages it.

5. I agree with your points but don't forget
that deferment is the parvenu of many a hawk, like 5X Cheney and * (although he technically 'served', he actually didn't at all.) Those with a way out will rarely serve and even more rarely be in harm's way. BTW, I feel for your family, especially your dad.

7. That is true I dont mean to advocate for the draft (quite the opposite)
but see those are the only choices in front of Mr. Obama, as every one seems to be cracking, and he is going to have to decide soon

11. You make no sense, You are opposed to war but you say to draft people and send them to war!
Speaking of someone who was drafted and sent to Vietnam.

Drafting people makes the pool of potential fighters larger, because of that, wars are escalated using the now higher number of available troops.

The escalations eventually must be reversed and in the end, as in Vietnam, nothing was gained by the escalation and the additional deaths cause by it.

The draft did not end the war in Vietnam. The draft was in place when the war started and in place when it ended. The war lasted 10 years. To say that the draft ended the Vietnam war would be saying that it would have gone on longer than 10 years without the draft. On the contrary, as I stated above, the draft made it possible to escalate and extend the war.

If we instated the draft today, the wars we are now in and possible new wars would be escalated not ended.

So you are saying end the wars, which I agree with or extend the wars which I disagree with.

12. Opt out for any theater of engagement. Volunteer-only for specific combat fronts.
And right to resign from uniformed service at any time for any or no reason.

14. Hear, hear!
Unless the country itself is in immediate danger of invasion the Federal government has no right to keep people in servitude when that servitude is no longer voluntary, and that includes a draft.
