http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/wire/os-shooting-reported-downtown-orlando-20091106,0,2642883.story

Orlando Sentinel Staff

November 6, 2009

"A former employee of a business located in a downtown Orlando building where a deadly mass shooting took place today is suspected in the attack.

Two people are dead and at least 17 were shot in the incident, which took place about noon today.

The suspect, Jason Rodriguez, 40, is believed to be driving a silver, 2002 Nissan SUV with tag number D11UXR, Orlando Police spokeswoman Sgt. Barbara Jones.

Police think he is armed and still in the area."

"The shootings took place in the offices of Reynolds, Smith & Hill, a transportation consulting firm."

Let's pray the numbers don't keep going up. This is horrible.

4. I think too many people are being pushed to the brink
by all the crap that's happening. And the ones who are the most mentally unstable, and have access to guns, are the ones most likely to do this sort of thing.

8. In hard times, more people snap, and/or turn to crime.
As the recession and the war drag on, I have no doubt we will see more of this.

12. Why weren't there any mass/spree killings during the Depression?
They certainly had the means - Self-loading weapons including the Thompson SMG were commonly available.
They had the motive - The greatest economic collapse in US history with little-to-no safety net or assistance available.

Basic crime rates may have been up but the 1930's saw nothing like the mindless mass murders we've seen so many of over the last two decades.

Even major hard-core freelance criminals like Dillinger, Nelson & Karpis weren't cold blooded murderers and passed up using violence in situations we would expect it to occur by today's standards.

The real question is why are late 20th to early 21st century human beings so prone to snapping and mass murder when their ancestors, who faced more trying times, were not?

The difference is these people targeted banks....it is a lot harder to rob a bank and hide in 2009.

5. Kind of figured it would happen.
Usually the copycats take a few days though.

I tend to agree with the comment about people being pushed to the brink.

10. Rodriguez was laid off a year ago
More from the Sentinel:

Rodriguez was laid off about a year and half ago from his job at RS&H where he did architectural work, said Renato Gonzalez, a manager in the firm's DeLand office. The layoff was part of firm cutbacks.

"I know that we was not very happy with the layoff," said Gonzalez, who recalled that Rodriguez made disgruntled comments when he left the firm, though nothing that indicated he would resort violence.

13. "Because they left me to rot"
That's what Rodriguez told a reporter who asked why he did it, as he was being taken into custody at his mother's house. (Sentinel)
