1. I agree that the RW's 'fighting them over there...' premise is ludicrous
but IMO it's too early to portray this guy as an actor in a radical Islamic plot...not that it will stop wingnuts & corporate media from trying.

It does point out the futility of the so-called 'war on terror,' however. How does the military wage war on individual soldiers who are carrying their personal demons inside their heads? By its very nature, war is a 'take no prisoners,' 'kill 'em all & let gawd sort 'em out' operation, but it's totally ineffective at identifying cases where an individual's cheese is incrementally sliding off one's cracker.

That's my recommendation for fighting terrorism: abandon the 19th-century setpiece battles and even the 'surgical strikes' and commando operations in favor of intelligence-gathering & identification of trends. Fight smarter, not harder. Apparently, this Army MD was already under FBI surveillance for suspicious internet postings, but there was no follow-through on their part that could have precluded this murderous rampage.

2. Yeah, I don't know whether he was in a plot or not. Frankly, I don't care. One can commit an act..
of terrorism acting completely alone.

4. I'm sure they'd probably say we have to "fight them there" even harder
Because, obviously, we're not trying hard enough...

6. That was always such a stupid talking point.
I don't know whether this new incident has anything to do with it or not, but among the many idiotic things the pro-war crowd said to prop up their case, the "fight them there so we don't have to fight them here" line must be the most brainless of all. Like, as long as our whole military is bottled up thousands of miles away, nobody could possibly attack America. WTF? So if the entire fire department is over in the next town, your house can't possibly burn down?

7. The two are not related

The military said the evidence from the Fort Hood attack doesn't indicate a terrorist act.

The guy flipped out from all appearances.
