AP source: Fort Hood shooting suspect Army major

By DEVLIN BARRETT

WASHINGTON -- A law enforcement official says a shooting suspect at Fort Hood has been identified as Army Maj. Malik Nadal Hasan.

The official said Hasan, believed to be in his late 30s, was killed after opening fire at the base. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case publicly.

The official says investigators are trying to determine if Hasan was his birth name, or if he changed his name and converted to the Islamic faith at some point in his life.

4. Ten bucks says suicidal rampage due to lack of personal advancement.
Like that guy who tossed a grenade into his CO's tent back in 2003, just as we were going into Iraq, somebody who felt their superiors were unfairly holding them back from advancement.

8. ALL majors get promoted. Really. They do. I saw an article in Army Times about it.
If he didn't advance, he must have REALLY screwed up.

9. How could that explain the other two suspects?
I'm just hoping the other two aren't also Muslim, and that this doesn't turn out to be a terror attack.

the people purportedly "protecting" us from "terror".

10. I'm sure the other 2 in custody have told the Army their "reasons"
but the Army doesn't want to give them the publicity they sought.

Odds are, we'll never know what they thought they were doing.

20. Maybe not.
According to a base spokesman, they are not sure of the involvement of the other 2 suspects. According to Rep John Carter, who is being interviewed by Big Ed right now, the other 2 suspects were questioned and possibly released; however, a 4th suspect is now in custody for questioning.
