That's the standard Army sidearm. Loaded with "full metal jacket" bullets (what the Army is required to use by international treaty) they're famous for having reduced lethality.

Additional: one civilian police officer among the dead. No children shot, contrary to the initial reports.

Those are the standard Army sidearm, under the designation "M9," and would be the easiest for him to get his hands on. It's a 9MM handgun with either a 10 or 15 round standard magazine.

That the Major who was killed had an Arabic-sounding name, and that there were a couple of other suspects in custody?

Our first thoughts may be that Ft Hood is the place we are training Iraqi and Afghani soldiers so they can be leaders in their country when they go home? If that is the case, it would have a terrorism connection. We don't really know the motives.

The military isn't saying what they're suspected of, or how hard it was to bring them in.

The Arabic sounding name thing is, at this point, purely the product of cable news.

On edit: apparently they've got an official now confirming that the shooter is Army Major Malik Hasan.
