18. I have always loved Mr. Rogers. He was a kind and gentle soul.

I felt he gave kids a safe place to be whoever they wanted to be.
When my son was a toddler he and I would sit and watch it every day.

Back in the 1980's when our mayor died, he did the sculpture in his memory. Berks deals with texture in a way that makes this children's TV icon look like he has some kind of horrible monster skin.

20. My own encounter with Mister Rogers.

My mother dies in 1968, when I was thirteen. She died a long, painful death and it was an awful time for us all, since children couldn't be with their hospitalized parents then. It was around the time that Mister Rogers' Neighborhood began, and I used to come home from school and watch this quiet, gentle man and his friends every afternoon. It was truly one of the things that let me be young when I felt old, and to have a bit of calm in a pretty awful life.

Years and years later, when I was a new mother myself and living in Pittsburgh, I wrote him a letter telling him how much he'd meant to me and how much he was helpful in my being a good mother myself. He wrote me back, a lovely typed letter that thanked me, with a little hand written note at the end that said "Your mother in heaven would be so proud of you." I had long since decided that heaven wasn't part of my beliefs, but the kindness and generosity in that little note made me cry. Still does.
